Last week, a large Apple leak was detailed as the upcoming M5 iPad Pro was disconnected in detail of several prominent Russian YouTubers. This is the second time that a seemingly real Apple product has escaped with inclusion before launching, where the M4 MacBook Pro was revealed prior to the plan in October 2024. And with almost every M5 iPad Pro Secret that was thrown into the light, we have now received the answer to most of our questions – except one.
Back in July, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman claimed that Apple was working on adding another front-facing camera to the M5 iPad Pro. The first unboxing video that revealed this device (submitted by YouTuber Wylsacom) seemed to suggest that it would come with a single front facing, as Wylsacom said this element was identical to the M4 iPad Pro — as you may have guessed, only has a camera on the front.
Still, in his power on newsletter this weekend, Gurman said he could “say with certainty” that the M5 iPad Pro would actually contain two front -facing cameras. And now we seem to have confirmation of this idea.
That’s because another Russian YouTuber (RomanceV768) managed to get hold of a leaked M5 iPad Pro, and their unboxing video specifically showed the other front-facing camera. In their video you can see a lens on the long edge of the tablet and another on its short side.
RomanceV768 noted that the other lens did not seem to be a real camera as they could not take pictures with it, and they mouseed that it could be a sensor to help with Apple’s Desk viewing video feature.
On the other hand, youtuber also opinens that the camera could simply be locked by software and will be unlocked when the device is launched. Given Gurman’s wording that another “camera” would be present (not a camera and an additional sensor), the latter option is possibly more likely.
Camera improvements?
Adding another camera can potentially improve the video performance and the Facial IID recognition, whether you use the tablet in portrait or landscape mode. Presumably, the device would just choose the best lens for the job without having to manually turn it manually, which will allow you to use it in which state is most comfortable.
Interestingly, Gurman did not seem to be aware of RomanceV768’s video. Apparently in the light of the Wylsacom, who said the M5 iPad Pro’s front-facing camera was the same single lens setup as the M4 model, Gurman noted that Apple has a story of dropping features (like the dual camera setup) at the eleventh hour, though he added that doing this would be a “weird, last minute.”
Combined with RomanceV768’s uncertainty about the new lens capacity, we can’t be sure you will end up with two “true” cameras if you get the M5 iPad Pro. In the end, we will have to wait until the device is launched before we can be confident.
What else is new?
The M5 iPad Pro Unboxing videos gave us more clarity about two other features that have been rumored about Apple’s tablet.
The first is the introduction of Apple’s M5 chip. According to benchmarks submitted by Wylsacom, this chip is approx. 10% faster in single-core performance and 16% faster in multi-core testing. As for its graphics output, this is an impressive 34% faster than the M4.
The second change is an increase in the memory of Entry-Level from 8 GB to 12 GB, which should bring greater performance to the iPad Pro. Interestingly, leaked benchmarks show that this 12 GB RAM amount is present at the basic level M5 iPad Pro with 256 GB of storage. In the M4 version, the models of 256 GB and 512 GB had 8 GB of memory, while storage for 1 TB or 2TB increased RAM to 12 GB. Whether it means that the M5 iPad Pro’s 1TB and 2TB editions will also offer increased memory capabilities unknown to now.
The question of the front -facing lenses may not yet be resolved, but the M5 iPad Pro comes into sharper and sharper focus. With its launch expected for the next few weeks, it’s not long before you can try all its new features.
