- Apple says you can prevent your MacBook from automatically teeth
- This usually happens when you open the lid or connect the power cable
- The terminal -based solution is aimed at more advanced users
It has been a well -known part of owning any of the best MacBooks for years: Open the lid or connect your charger when off and your laptop starts automatically without having to press the power button . But this situation does not work for everyone, and Apple has now explained how you can bypass this behavior if you want.
In a new support document, the Apple explains the process of turning off this feature. Once disabled, your MacBook will only load when you press a button or index field.
That said, it’s not a particularly simple process – for example, there is no change to change in the Settings app. So it’s probably more of a power user solution than anything else.
According to the support document, you must first make sure your Mac has an Apple Silicon chip and runs MacOS Sequoia or later. Then open the terminal app (placed in the utilities folder) and type one of the following commands, and then press Return:
- To prevent your laptop from turning on when you open the lid or connect the power cable, type sudo nvram bootprference =%00
- To prevent the laptop from starting only when you open the lid, write sudo nvram bootprference =%01
- Or only to prevent boot -up when connecting the power cable, write sudo nvram bootprference =%02
To exit, type your administrator password and tap Return. To undo the commands and restore your MacBook to its previous way of working, just write sudo nvram -d bootprference and press Return.
A power user fix
It gives you a few options to customize your MacBook’s startup behavior as you want. While not the simplest solution, it at least gives you a little more control over your laptop. With the automatic boot deactivated, your MacBook should only load if you tap a key or index field.
Why do you want to prevent your MacBook from starting up when you open the lid? You might just want to inspect your laptop or take pictures of it if you want to sell it. Having it turned on when you open the lid means you have to turn it off again, something you don’t have to bother with if you could just disable this behavior in the first place.
As always with the terminal, make sure you know what you’re doing before you start entering commands. If you do, this can be a useful way to get a little more control over how your MacBook works.
