Karachi: At least 45 to 50 inmates have escaped from the Malir prison in Karachi in what seems to be one of the most serious jailbreaks in recent years, according to Sindh’s home minister, Zia-Ul-Hasan Lanjar.
Under the shaking of the earthquake that shook Karachi on Monday, inmates were temporarily moved out of their barracks for security reasons, prison officials said, adding that it was during this period that the prisoners managed to flee.
In a speech with the media in Tuesday’s small hours, Lanjar said the situation in prison is now under control.
He explained that the prisoners during the earthquakes were moved out of their barracks for security on Monday in line with standard conditions. During this moment of disturbance, however, about 700 to 1,000 inmates were gathered at the main gate of the prison.
The minister also said that almost 100 prisoners managed to force the gate up and flee. He confirmed that 46 of them have since been re -captured, while about 18 to 20 are still pretty much.
However, the prison administration said over 50 prisoners out of at least 100 escape have been arrested again.
He said Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has been fully informed about the situation and added that CM instructed him to visit the prison personally to oversee the situation.
The domestic minister added that the identity and records of all slack prisoners are available and raids are performed in their homes and the surrounding areas. He expressed hope that all escape would be arrested in the morning.
The incident is of a serious nature and may have involved negligence from the prison staff, the domestic minister said. He also said the first reports suggested that a prison wall had collapsed, but later updated updates, that the prisoners fled through the main gate instead of breaking through any structure.
The inspector of prisons, Qazi Nazir, has reached the Malir prison. Sindh’s prison minister also arrived the place and has been in direct contact with prison officials.
Previously, a large quota of Frontier Corps (FC) staff rushed to the site.
A common search operation involving the special security device (SSU) was launched to track the remaining escape. After the operation was wrapped up, Contingents of Police, Rangers and FC took control of prison.
Later, the home minister, IG visited prisons and digging prisons, Malir prison.
Lanjar said that all necessary intelligence and security resources are deployed, including control points and monitoring measures, to capture the prisoners again.
Rescue officials reported that three FC staff and a prison guard were wounded during the incident. An inmate has reportedly been killed during the chaos that followed.
The Sindh Minister of Prisons stated that disciplinary action will be taken against any officials who are negligent. He also emphasized that the search for the remaining refugees will continue until everyone is arrested.
Governor Tessori takes notice
Governor of Sindh, Kamran Tessori, has also noticed the incident and expressed serious concern about the security course.
He urged the home minister and inspector of the Sindh police to ensure the immediate arrest of all escape.
The governor said he was convinced that the provincial government and police would soon bring all the prisoners back into custody.
He further emphasized the importance of a thorough and transparent study and expressed hope that the full facts of the incident would be revealed.
