Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, the beloved chaplain to Loyola Chicagos Men’s basketball team retires at 106 years old due to health concerns, according to the school’s student newspaper.
Sister Jean who has become a staple in College Basketball The community and an important member of Ramblers’ family Since first, Team Chapplain was appointed in 1994, has retired only weeks after celebrating her 106 -year birthday.

Vice President of Communications Christian Anderson confirmed to Loyola Phoenix Earlier this month, Schmidt would no longer earn in official tasks. He did not extend sister Jean’s health concerns.

“Sister Jean retires and resigns from official assignments in Loyola,” Anderson told the newspaper Student. “We are aware of the sister’s privacy in terms of health and cannot comment beyond what was mentioned in her [Aug. 21] message.”
In a message to students on her birthday, sister Jean explained his absence on campus.
“Birthdays are special days and this one is also very special. In fact, I’m not able to be there because I have a bad summer cold and other health problems, so it’s decided I shouldn’t go to Lake Shore -Campus to be with you on my birthday. It makes me very sad but you can still celebrate.”

Sister Jean served as the team’s chaplain for 30 years, but got into the limelight under Loyola’s unlikely Final Four performance in 2018 Ncaa Championship Tournament.
In 2023, she traveled to New York for the team’s first round Matchup in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament. She was 103 years old when she took the trip.
During this journey, she appeared at “Fox & Friends,” Where she shared the three simple things she attributes to living a long and healthy life.

“Well, I tell people when they ask me the question that I eat well, I sleep well, and hopefully I pray well,” she said at the time.
“My basketball team, it keeps me young. All these young people keep me young in my heart. I can’t go but they keep me young in my heart,” she added.
