Six year old swept away in sewer drainage

Rawalpindi:

A six-year-old girl was swept away in an open sewer drain in the Khalid colony, Mohra Chhappar on Chakri Road. Rescue 1122 launched a search operation, but it was suspended at sunset due to darkness and resumed Monday morning.

In a separate incident on Adiala Road, two cattle occupants were stranded on a haug after the water level suddenly rose. They were probably rescued by Rescue 1122 staff using a boat.

Rescue officials said the missing child identified as Nagina had tried to pick up a shoe that had fallen in the drain when she lost balance and was carried away by the flow.

Rescue teams immediately reached the site and deployed an emergency vehicle, an ambulance, a hiking vehicle and a seven-member team that included two divers and swimmers.

The drain is reported to be five to eight meters deep, with water flowing at eight to 10 kilometers per hour. Despite a full -day search, the operations were stopped by evening due to poor visibility. Officials confirmed that the search would resume from the same point Monday morning.

Meanwhile, rescue teams on Adiala Road traded soon after receiving reports of two men caught by rapidly rising water. Both were evacuated within minutes and moved to safety.
