SJC meeting convened after seven-month hiatus

After a break of almost seven months, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi has called for a meeting in Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on July 12.

SJC is a constitutional body authorized to continue against judges in the overall courts on charges of mismatch.

Currently, CJP Afridi acts as chairman. Other members include justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Munib Akhtar, Lahore High Court Chief Justice Alia Neelum and Sindh High Court Chief Justice Junaid Ghaffar.

The Council is currently investigating various complaints about wrongdoing against the judges of the Superior Court.

During the previous meeting last December, the Council discussed amendments to the Code of Conduct for Judges in accordance with Article 209 (2) of the Constitution. 8, as well as revisions of the highest legal council procedure for the investigation procedure, 2005.

A committee led by Justice Munib Akhtar was put together to prepare the proposed changes to both the Code of Conduct and the Investigative Procedure.

The committee is expected to present its proposals at the upcoming meeting.

Last year, six Islamabad High Court (IHC) had sought guidance from SJC on interference from performing agencies in legal functions.

Instead of taking the matter into SJC, then Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa SUO SUO MOTU procedures on the question began.
