- James Gunn has hit back at a report about his casting process Superman successor
- Deadline has claimed that four actors have tested for an apparent key role
- The DC Studios co-CEO has called it “bulls**t”, “shitdy” and “wrong” reporting
James Gunn has slammed a new report that suggests four actors have auditioned for an apparent key role in The man of tomorrowaka his Superman movie sequel.
Gunn took to Threads yesterday (April 8), calling out Deadline for its “shocking and incorrect” and “bulls**t” reporting about people who have auditioned for the DC Universe (DCU) film, according to the Hollywood trade publication.
Earlier in the day, Deadline claimed that Star Wars actor Adria Arjona, who appeared in the iconic franchise’s critically acclaimed Disney+ show Andorand Alien: Earth‘s Sydney Chandler was among a quartet of stars who had tested for the role of Maxima. The cleaning lady star Eva De Dominici and Tell me liesGrace Van Patten was also named as a potential candidate for the Fiery Queen of Almerac, who was originally introduced to DC comics fans as a potential new love interest for the Man of Steel.

But hours later, Gunn – who discovered the report after it was shared by comic book fan site Nexus Point News – took to social media to reveal what Deadline had reported.
“This is not against Nexus — they share what Deadline reported — but Deadline’s reporting is sloppy and wrong,” a frustrated Gunn wrote. “I’ve always thought that Deadline was quite thorough in their journalism, but that’s not the case here, so I’m frankly disappointed.
“If someone would have run those names off us, we would have said that’s bulls**t,” he continued. “I have been friends with Adria [for] long time since I threw her in The Belko Experiment. I’m a fan of both Marisa and Ella, but I’ve never met either of them. Crazy.”

Prior to Gunn’s comments, Deadline indicated that DC Studios representatives declined to comment on the story. But after Gunn’s response, Deadline updated its article to defend what it had heard from its sources.
“Deadline went through its normal news-gathering editorial process for this story,” an unnamed editor noted. “After a review in light of new information about the actors involved, the story has been updated.”
Curiously, another Los Angeles-based news outlet – The Hollywood Reporter (THR) – has since published its own article, claiming that their own sources have also told it that Arjona, Chandler, Van Patten and De Dominici are in the running to portray Maxima. Gunn has yet to publicly comment on THR’s piece, but I suspect his response would be the same as the one he gave to Deadline’s.
‘One left and we’re done’

Understandably, Gunn’s fling with Deadline sparked further inquiries from fans eager to learn more about the DCU Chapter One movie.
Reply to someone on Threads who asked if this was Gunn’s way of confirming that Maxima was in The man of tomorrowhe replied, “I absolutely do not (and did not) affirm that.”
When another interested asked when The man of tomorrow‘s lead role would be announced, Gunn wrote: “I already have every major role”. Finally, when another questioned whether every role—major or otherwise—had been filled, Gunn revealed that there was “one left” to complete before its list had been rounded out.
