- GPT-4O is coming back to chatgpt plus users
- There have been plenty of complaints about gpt-5
- Openai is looking at ways to improve the new model
When Openai rolled its shiny new GPT-5 model to Chatgpt earlier this week, the plan was to get it to replace all the older models for both free and paying users-but now brought back the GPT-4o in response to a significant number of user complaints.
“We definitely underestimated how much some of the things people like in GPT-4o matter to them, even though the GPT-5 performs better in most ways,” Openai CEO Sam Altman would publish on social media after announcing the GPT-4o would stay around.
However, it is not clear how long the GPT-4o Reprieve will be, and it will only remain available to those at $ 20-PR. Month Chatgpt Plus plan. “We will see the use when we think about how long we have to offer older models,” Altman said.
There were other updates from Altman: GPT-5 rate limits are doubled for Chatgpt Plus users, and some behind the scenes upgrade upgrades make GPT-5 also “smarter” as the latest model continues to roll out to everyone.

As we reported yesterday, the answer to GPT-5 from many users has been pretty brutal. It has been labeled “terrible”, “inadequate”, “disgusting”, “cruel”, just like “an overworked secretary”, and worse than GPT-4o-with-tight restrictions on how much it can be used.
People are not happy that GPT-5 does not give shorter answers than previous models nor throw more answers that the user then has to choose from. If you are using AI to try to save time it is not ideal.
At least Openai listens to his user base with reintroducing GPT-4o, though you may not see it right away in the model picker if you’ve been upgraded to GPT-5. “Users have very different opinions about the relative strength of the GPT-4O vs GPT-5,” admits Altman.
Openai CEO also says that his team sees in several ways to provide different personalities and adjustments within the same model for users. See this space for further adjustments to GPT-5 in the future.
