It has been known for some time that Sonos has been working on a streaming video device aimed at launching in 2025, with big leaks that revealed what it would cause.
After Sonos’ former CEO left as a result of the company’s terrible 2024, Sonos has a new CEO that changes a lot of things in the company – and according to The Verge, this has led to the cancellation of streaming video launch. The Verge has proven to have very accurate Sonos information over the years, so this is almost certainly correct.
Given that I called this box “convicted” based on the details we originally heard-specific that it would have ads-based software, I would still cost up to $ 400-I can’t say that I responded with very surprise to see this news … But in fact, I really hope this project isn’t completely dead because one half of it sounded amazing.
The Sonos Streaming Box promised to give a whole new kind of wireless home theater experience with Sonos speakers that served as an HDMI -Switch with 4K 120Hz review. This is a great feature on your own because even in 2025 most of the best TVs will only have two HDMI 2.1 ports and one is likely to be the HDMI Earc port for your audio system.
But also HDMI switches with auto-switching between sources are really rare, so a smarter version that does this is very desirable.
In addition, the box was set to offer new home theater configuration options with Sonos speakers. Currently, Sonos Surround System consists of an audio bar for the TV, two rear speakers and an optional subwoofer, but the streaming box was said to offer the opportunity to use individual Sonos speakers as the front left and right channels, with a sound beam that potentially acted as center speaker.
Sonos fans have been shouting at this for years to give a more ‘real’ surround system as an alternative to the best Dolby Atmos Soundbar. It seemed to finally be on the way – and I hope this baby is not thrown out with the bath water.
A simpler box, it’s more price competitive?
I already wrote an essay about why this flexibility could have made the Sonos box a big hit with home theater enthusiasts, so I won’t go too deep into it right now.
But let me put what I want to see because I think there is something that can be a really big hit here. What if Sonos could still release a connecting box? It just wouldn’t include the smart TV part, which means it needs much less powerful treatment.
It will still include the HDMI review and change functionality and wireless connection to Sonos speakers – maybe it costs about $ 200. It’s not cheap, but as part of the right speaker system it can easily be worth it.
Let’s compare this to the Sony Bravia Theater Quad that costs $ 2,500. It is a one-box system that includes four surround speakers and a wireless plug for your TV. Each speaker has forward and up the fuel drivers.
Sonos similar to this would be my hypothetical wireless TV connection box plus four Sonos ERA 300 speakers. Like Sony, this would give both surround and unpirable drivers – but the cost of this set would be at the time of writing $ 1,906. It’s $ 200 for my box that I invented and $ 853 per day. Pair of Sonos Era 300 speakers.
We could add a Sonos Ray for $ 179 as a center channel (somewhat Sony system hard missing unless it’s connected to a Sony -TV) and still uses less than the Sony Option -you can add a subwoofer too, in that case if you want.
This kind of speaker setup, with real satellite tips on the left and right speakers, is not officially possible with a Sonos setup right now -a box that allows it to be very compared to most other wireless home theater setups, although it appears to be expensive to buy on your own at first redness.
So what I really hope is that Sonos plans to kill the smart TV software page of things that no one really wanted but holds a smaller, slimmer, more blurry version of his TV box.
I have written before that if Sonos does not have a kind of technique for wireless connections to TVs coming, it will have a real problem in the long term, because it will definitely become more mainstream in the next few years.
This would solve this problem and Enable even better opportunities that fans have shouted for – that’s the kind of thing that could put Sonos back in fans’ good grace. Let’s see if it happens …
