- Sony’s new headphones are easier to repair than before
- The battery is a component that is more straightforward to replace
- That should mean fewer of these devices become e-waste
The Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones launched a few weeks ago and have already attracted lots of ROS-SE, for example, our Sony WH-1000XM6 review. Now we have another reason to invest in a couple: They are easier to repair than previous models.
According to the experts at IFIXIT, “Sony seems to have made a conscious effort to design the WH-1000XM6 with repair in mind” and there have been adjustments to how these headphones have been composed that show it.
Of crucial importance, Ifixit says, the battery inside the headphones is now attached in place with two screws snarers than stuck with the double-sided adhesive used for the Sony WH-1000XM5, which was launched back in 2022.
The modular driver Midtplate is straightforward to replace also, says Ifixit-there is no glue to handle, and the component can be obtained without the risk of damaging other parts of the interior of the headphones.

IFIXIT also reports that the USB-C port, sound jack and button card are “easily accessible”, making repairs easier. The idea is that if part of the Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones fail, you do not need to replace them completely.
However, not all good news on the repair front: Ifixit says there is not much improvement as far as the headband goes, so if there is a problem with this part of the device, you may need to get a new pair.
Of course, when we say that the Sony WH-1000XM6 is easier to repair, you still need a certain amount of technical know-how and some special tools for the job. However, the job is now more straightforward, whether you do it yourself or take it into a workshop.
There is plenty of advice on Ifixit on how to go to repair the Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones and a whole number of other gadgets, but if you weigh the benefits of buying them, you can add repair ability to the list.
