Spotify was down – here is all we know about its huge interruption

Refresh

“All Clear,” says Spotify

So it seems to be – after about four hours of trouble, Spotify has sent the message above on his status account of X (formerly Twitter).

There is no explanation of what caused one of the biggest power breaks in the Spotify history, but we are just grateful to get our music back.

A Spotify spokesman added that “Spotify experienced a power outage today that began around 06.20 EDT from 11:45 EDT, Spotify is back and is working normally. You can check @spotifystatus X channel for any additional updates”. Hopefully we don’t need …

On the road to a full recovery

While some parts of Spotify have now recovered (the search functionality, the app’s website), the streaming service is still not fully back to its old self – and Spotify’s support page continues to report “continuous problems”.

A Community Post for “Downtime” summarizes the most important questions people have reported including
that the “app is not loaded correctly” and “playback problems”. In the past, many reported that they even struggled to access Spotify’s support site, but it seems to be at least to be back.

In better news, I can now stream all music (not just the songs I’ve downloaded to offline listening), so it looks like a Spotify engineer has found the offensive network cable and connected it. Okay, it’s probably more complicated than that, but whatever it is, it seems to work …

Spotify returns slowly

A few hours ago, Spotify was really out for the count – but at least it is at least to sit on his stool in the corner and look the aperture and apparently recover. The down detector reports fall (now down to just over 12,000 reports in the US) and we see some elements in the streaming service return.

The web player is now back for most, like the search function. But Spotify-bending among the Techradar team still reports problems with the app’s home screen that is not working properly.

If you are in the same boat, one thing that helped me was to close the app (pushing up from the bottom of the screen where he paused in the middle to show the app switcher and then push up again). This brought back a lot of the app’s functionality, though I still see the annoying “something went wrong” above when I tried to stream music that I haven’t downloaded …

Some shots of improvement?

I don’t want to talk too early, but there are signs that Spotfy’s problems may be facilitated a bit. My colleague Jake Krol in the US says the search is now working for him again (it’s still not for me), but that the app’s website is still down.

More promising, the downsteps crash for Spotify reports has fallen especially in the US (above) in the last hour or so, and it is the same in England (now down to just over 8,000). That said, it’s still a large number, so a large number of people still lack their musical soundtracks today …

It’s apparently not a security hack

Each time power cuts occur on this scale, a common theory is that a major cyber attack is the cause (see the big x wobble last month). But Spotify has just denied that this is the case.

A new update (above) on Spotify Status account on X says “The reports that this is a security hack is fake”, which is at least some good news if you are concerned about the security of your account and playlists.

Spotify has not elaborated on what the actual cause is, but has acknowledged that it is a major interruption and added that it “works to solve it as soon as possible”. This previous search will not solve everything, so excuse me while I blow some dust from my old CD stack and pop back to the 90s.

Spotify is still very down

Two hours on I still have the same Spotify problems – I’m only able to play downloaded music and search is still barked. It seems that most people are in the same boat where my American colleagues confirm that the app is showing a “something went wrong” message and that the Spotify site is down.

The Downdetect Reports remain heavenly high, and unfortunately we have not yet heard from Spotify beyond its previous statement. If you missed it, a spokesman told us “The problem of search has been processed and an update has started to roll out to all users”.

Not only does the app’s search still not work, the rest of Spotify seems to have crumbled around it. This is now definitely the biggest Spotify stream break I have seen in my many years as a premium subscriber -let’s hope for our musical sense that it will be resolved soon.

That solution doesn’t seem to be working yet …

It is now approx. 40 minutes, since a Spotify spokesman told us it rolled a background fix to “the problem of searching”. But search still doesn’t work for me – and thousands of others are still reporting problems around the world on DownDetector (above).

In the US, we are almost 50,000 reports – a large number showing how widespread the problems are. In the UK, the reports have fallen slightly to about 12,000, but have been pretty consistent in the last 45 minutes. There are also other remarkable spikes everywhere from Australia to India.

What is clear is that this is more than just a search problem – many still see blank home screens and are only able to play offline music. The whole Spotify website is currently down – something I can’t remember I was happening, yes, ever.

We have asked for an update from Spotify about its ongoing problems and will tell you as soon as we hear back.

What about the other Spotify problems?

As I sent below, a Spotify spokesman told us about 15 minutes ago that “the question of search has been processed and an update has begun to roll out to all users”. But today’s Spotify problems seem to be wider than just a search problem.

Although it has been the biggest symptom to me, many users like my colleagues in the US still find that the website still shows three dots (above) and that the web player is still down.

It’s more like a global power outage than just a search problem – so it’s left to see if Spotify’s fix addresses all the problems many are still experiencing. I still check the app in hope …

Good news! A solution is rolled out now

We just heard back from Spotify – a spokesman has told us, “The question of search has been dealt with and an update has started to roll out to all users”.

We double -controlled with Spotify to ask if this will require an app update and Spotify has confirmed that it will be a background update without the need for user action.

That’s good news, but search still doesn’t work for me in the Spotify app. Guess I will have to wait a while to check out the new Bon Iver album …

This is now a large Spotify Ustop

The number of reports on Spotify problems about DownDetector continues to increase in the US and UK -this is now the biggest Spotify outbreak I can remember for a while. We are now over 27,000 reports in the US and 17,000 in the UK.

The Techradar team finds out that Spotify Web Player is down (above) and many find out that their home screens are not loaded into the app.

Spotify has not further commented on what is causing the problems, without recognizing X (formerly Twitter) that it has a large wing. We’ve contacted Spotify and will update you as soon as we know more – in the meantime it’s over to YouTube we’re going!

Spotify acknowledges that there are problems

Spotify has now commented on the problems many people are experiencing, with the Spotify Status account of the X -Extension that the streaming giant is “aware of some problems right now and checking them out”.

It’s a fairly vague description – and it seems that users are experiencing multiple symptoms from the app reporting a lack of internet connection to problems logging in.

My own problems appear to be limited to the app’s search feature. Let’s hope that there is still a relatively simple solution to all the problems – we have reached Spotify for more details.

Spotify is buggy today

I first noticed Spotify problems when I was trying to search for a new album – it served me “couldn’t load the page” above, and that’s still the case now.

Oddly enough, I’m still able to stream music that is already in my collection and playlists, so the problems seem located for some features in the app. Some at the Techradar team have no problems at all.

However, the Downdetector reports do not fall (especially in the UK), so it seems to be more than a temporary blip …

It’s a pretty big spik …

Right now, the biggest increase in spotify questions reports in the UK -At the time of writing, over 21,000 Spotify users have reported problems with the smartphone app and web player on Downdetector, and social media platforms such as X are also filled with complaints.

Interestingly, there has been a smaller spikes in Downdetector reports in the United States, which has now dramatically dropped to about 200. Hopefully it means the problems can be short-lived, but so far we don’t know what causes them.
