Eventually, the officials of Jets -goalkeeper Connor Hellebuyck, the puck in his own network, decided. The goal gave Dallas a 3-2 lead at the time. The stars won the game, 5-2.

Jets coach Scott Arniel questioned the officials’ interpretation of the rule that enabled Petrovic.

“The rule says that if the puck is kicked if it hits a body or a stick of anyone other than the goalkeeper, it counts as a goal. It hit our goaltender’s stick and went into the net. That’s no goal,” Arniel said. “So they said Helly propelled the puck in and I haven’t seen the word propelled in the rulebook.”

Stars coach Peter Deboer said he was glad that officials took the time to review the play to “get it right.”

The puck originally came out of a Mikko Rantan shot. It ricocheted by Hellebuyck to his right side and then out of Petrovic’s share and back to the net.

“I saw him kind of kick it, but I didn’t see a repetition of it. … I thought it was 50-50 probably, but thanks God, they called it a goal,” Rantan said.

Petrovic, who scored in the playoffs for the first time in nine years, called it a “lucky goal.”

NHL fans were not thrilled and expressed it so much on X.

The Rantan scored 49 seconds after the game resumed.
