- Stranger Things‘Creators reveal how many hours of recordings they filmed for season 5
- Duffer -brothers shot over 650 hours of material for Hit Netflix Shows last season
- The couple also debuted with a new one behind the scenes Look at NEXT on Netflix 2025
Stranger Things Season 5 is surprising that it is surprising to be the HIT series’s biggest post yet – but I don’t think any of us realized how much footage was shot.
The short answer? Very. As very much. It is according to the massively successful Netflix show creators Matt and Ross Duffer who have revealed that they filmed more than 650 hours of material for Stranger Things‘last season.
The siblings, collectively known as Duffer Brothers (shockingly, I know) confirmed just as much at Next on Netflix 2025. Going to the stage during the Los Angeles edition of this year’s multinational event, the duo raised preliminary lid on the season 5’s Development that included the fascinating bit of the hundreds of recordings they collected during its 12-month shoot.
“We spent a whole year filming this season,” said Ross Duffer. “In the end, we’ve caught over 650 hours of recordings. So it’s unnecessary to say, this is our biggest and most ambitious season yet.”
Echo Stranger Things Star Maya Hawke’s previous comments that season 5 will be “Basically, eight films”, Duffers also teased that the Sci-Fi Horror series’ last chapter maybe emotionally destroy us when Stranger Things Season 5 will be launched later in the year.
“We think it’s our most personal story,” added Matt Duffer. “It was super intense and emotional to film – for us and for our actors. We’ve been doing this show together for almost 10 years. There was a lot of crying. There was so much crying. The show means so much to all of us and all puts their hearts and souls in it.
Potential spoilers follow for Stranger Things Season 5.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, Duffer Brothers also debuted a tempting new look at Stranger Things 5 Under next on Netflix 2025. Like Stranger Things Season 5 video revealed during Netflix Tudum 2024 and the first look teaser released online last July last year teasing new characters and a possible time shopping, but it was just another behind the scenes (BTS) look at it Upcoming Rate.
It doesn’t mean it wasn’t worth showing, remember you. I participated in the British edition of NEXT on Netflix, and with the video that was livestreamed to me and other audience members from LA, I can report on what was shown. For starters, the latest BTS video gave us a look at the recurring Vecna who appears to have recovered from the injuries he has caused last season finale (read my Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2 ends explained piece for more details).
The footage also showed eleven wearing baggy clothes – presumably in an attempt to hide her identity – and use her supernatural ability to fight some actors in Mocap suits running on all fours. Do these individuals perform the movements for the return of Season 2’s Demodogs? I can imagine that.

There were also blink-and-you-I-it clips of Max, some of our heroes interacting with Season 5’s new, including Jake Connelly’s Mystery character. The recordings were also played along with sound from a conversation between Mike and the student, where the former tells the latter that they will end this match together.
All in all, season 5 looks and sounds great – so when is it launched on Netflix? The short answer is: We don’t know. Stranger Things 5 Only wrapped film shooting on December 20, 2024 and given the amount of recordings that Duffers have to silence through as part of the post-production process, I am convinced that we will not see one of the best Netflix show last time until the end of 2025. According to Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Bella Bajara, Netflix Tudum 2025 will take place in May, so maybe we will learn more about Season 5’s release window.
