The prominent banker and philanthropist Sultan Ali Allana was honored with the prestigious Nishan-E-Khidmat, one of Pakistan’s highest civilian awards, at a special investment ceremony held on Pakistan Day (today).
The award was approved by President Asif Ali Zardari on August 14, 2024, during the country’s 78th Day of Independence -Family, recognizing Allana’s remarkable contribution in public service.
Sultan Ali Allana has been a driving force behind transformative initiatives across Pakistan’s economic and social sectors. A pioneer in microbank, he founded the first microfinance bank in 2002 and was the basic work for financial inclusion.
His 40-year career is a testimony to innovation and progress, characterized by his efforts to relocate Pakistan’s financial system to comply with international standards that played a key role in the country’s removal from the FATF Gray list.
Among his many results, Allana was at the forefront of the creation of Roshan Digital accounts in September 2020. By February 2025, the initiative had opened 797,350 accounts and generated deposits of over $ 9,768 billion, offering overseas Pakistanis a seamless channel for transfer and investment.
He also launched Pakistan’s first agricultural initiative under a commercial bank and supported small farmers with sustainable frameworks that strengthened rural areas.
In addition to his banking innovations, Allana has contributed to promoting trade and trade in South Asia and securing international investments in Pakistan through engagements with global financial institutions, such as the IMF, BII, IFC and Chinese financial units.
His philanthropic ventures, including the establishment of the HBL Foundation, have promoted access to education and healthcare for underestimated societies.
