Phoenix Suns fired Mike Budenholzer Monday after only one season, the team announced.
ESPN first reported the move.
“Competing at the highest level remains our goal and we couldn’t meet expectations this season. Our fans deserve better. Change is needed,” the team said.

Phoenix made huge features in the past few seasons in an attempt to get back to the NBA Championship image. It started with the acquisition of Kevin Durant from Brooklyn Nets, and it was followed by the trade for Bradley Beal from Washington Wizards.
Durant finished his second full season with Suns and Beal packed his second season in Phoenix. Suns were 36-46 and missed the playoffs for the first time in four seasons.

Budenholzer came over from Milwaukee Bucks after his shocking departure. He coached Bucks to an NBA title over Suns.
Phoenix will now enter an offseason filled with uncertainty and their wise movements have ultimately returned. Suns’ first round pick was swapped with Houston Rockets, which will have an opportunity to get a lottery committee despite being one of the best teams at the Western Conference.

Suns has not made the conference championship since 2021. They have released three coaches in three years.
