- Sunweb confirms data violation after phishing -e -emails targeted customers with fake payment requests
- Attackers stole contact and booking information; Sensitive ID and payment data remained secure
- Incident was contained; Violation reported to Dutch authorities; Customers encouraged to contact their banks
The Sunweb Group has confirmed to suffer a cyberattack and data violation and has called on its customers to remain vigilant against incoming phishing attacks.
A security message sent on the travel company’s website said Sunweb was made aware of the violation when its customers began receiving phishing -e emails.
The e -emails called for victims to “confirm their details and make a payment, otherwise their vacation would be canceled.”
“Fully contained”
When E emails did not come from Sunweb, but rather from another hacked company’s e -mail server, the company launched a study.
This determined Sunweb’s network was broken, and at least some of the information used in the attacks stems from this violation.
The agency did not say who the striker was or if they came in contact. It said they stole people’s names, E -mail addresses, phone numbers and various reservation information (travel dates, destinations and the like).
On the other hand, credit card information, passwords and passports or ID document information remained secure.
The agency also did not say how many people were affected by the violation or whether they are given any free identity theft and credit monitoring services, as well as standard practices in these types of cybertacks.
“The incident is now fully contained and the affected system is further secured,” Sunweb confirmed.
After confirming the attack, the agency reached affected persons and is currently preparing follow -up communication. The affected systems were closed and “additional security measures” implemented. Sunweb did not mention what goals they were.
Finally, it reported the violation to the Dutch supervisory authority and told his clients who suspected having been fooled – to reach their banks to try to prevent the false transactions from going through.
