Surfshark has just revealed a larger network upgrade: the world’s first 100 Gbps VPN servers.
These new servers mark a big leap from the industry’s current 10 GBPS standard. This means that Surfshark’s servers could handle significantly more data at once and remove bottlenecks in peak times. Even if many people use VPN at the same time, take advantage of a smoother connection.
Surfshark already ranks among the best VPN providers, and this step separates it from the competition in a larger way.
“A big leap forward”
As Surfshark explains in a blog post, “This development represents a large leap forward from the standard 10 GBPS servers – a jump designed to meet the rising demands of today’s digital landscape.”
It is difficult to disagree as the industry standard is 10 Gbps, which means that the upgrade has to deliver far more data capacity than today’s fastest VPNs. It is important to note that this refers to the total bandwidth capacity of each server and not individual user speeds.
According to Surfshark, the new infrastructure is designed to handle much heavier loads without slowing down. In practice, it means faster and more consistent connections, even in peak times when VPN networks are typically under pressure.
Surfshark says it’s ready for the future. As there are more and more users who require quick connections to things like 4K streaming, games, VR and remote work, the server bandwidth must increase to meet these needs.

“All users connected to the server have far more legroom for better speed,” said Karolis Kačiulis, leading system engineer at Surfshark. Kačiulis also emphasized that Surfshark wants to push for innovation throughout the industry, causing its competitors to upgrade from 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps.
Kačiulis believes that 100 GBPS VPN servers will one day be the standard and Surfshark wanted to be the first VPN service to offer that upgrade.
For starters, the roll -out is limited to a few servers in Amsterdam, but Surfshark says it has plans for potential future roll -out elsewhere across the globe.
Surfshark paves the way for other VPN providers
The requirements made in Surfshark’s message, check – this is really an industry first. Without a doubt, some of its competitors would like to follow, although it is difficult to predict when it can happen. Nor does Surfshark specify how long this limited roll -out will last and when we see 100 Gbps servers outside the Netherlands.
Most VPNs today advertise 10 GBPS server speeds, which is a standard that only became common within the last few years. Surfshark himself upgraded only to 10 Gbps all over its fleet at the end of 2024.
Providers such as NordVPN, ExpressVPN and Proton VPN upgraded from 1 Gbps to 10 Gbps connections to reduce overload and improve reliability, but Surfshark is the first to go beyond that.
Based on our own test, Surfshark is currently the fastest VPN provider. The potential shift to 100 Gbps servers could help it keep that place, even when the connections are especially busy.
