- Synology’s range in 2025 Plus only works with certain hard drives
- It says this is for lower error frequencies and compatibility issues
- Older models are not affected by this new policy
Taiwanese NAS-Maker synology has confirmed a new policy that requires the synology-labeled hard drives to be used for full compatibility within its 2025 Plus series of network mode storage (NAS) devices.
From the launch, the political states that the Synological Label Hard Drives must be used, but the company promises to “update the product compatibility list as further drives can be thoroughly monitored in synology systems,” a company spokesman said (via Ars Technica).
Meanwhile, this could clarify a reduced choice and increased costs for customers with potential sustainability issues that stem from users’ inability to use hard drives they may already have, making them useless.
Synology NAS -Devices Hard Drives
Synology has nine products in its Plus range that supports up to 24 hard drives, but users will only be necessary to use approved storage drives.
The company said that “synology systems are less likely to have drift errors and continuous compatibility problems.”
Chad Chiang, CEO of Synology’s Germany and UK companies, noted: “With our proprietary hard disk solution, we have already seen significant benefits for our customers in different implementation scenarios.”
Despite the change of models from 2025-courage on models, the company confirmed that older models sold up to and including 2024 (excluding XS Plus series and rack models) remain unchanged.
Interestingly, Synology does not make its own hard drives, rather than choosing to redirect models from popular brands like Toshiba and Seagate.
This may be good news, indicating the possibility that additional Toshiba and Seagate models may appear on the approved list of third-party drives at a later date, but it may also mean that drives from other brands may be less likely to appear on the list.
Of course, this is only speculation, but we have contacted Synology for further details in the hope that we can access a list of pre -approved third -party drives.
