- Tata Technologies informed the Indian Stock Exchange of an attack
- It says it was a ransomware -attack but did not shared further details
- The study is still in progress but the operations are in progress
Tata Technologies has revealed that it suffered a ransomware attack that curled parts of its IT operation.
In a review sent to the National Stock Exchange of India, the company said it “became aware” of a ransomware event that affected a few of its IT assets.
“As a precautionary measure, some of the IT services were temporarily suspended and have now been restored,” the company said in the letter. “Our client delivery services have remained fully functional and unaffected everywhere.”
Targeting of large Indian companies
Apart from that, the letter doesn’t say much. Therefore, we do not know who attackers were how they managed to break into the infrastructure of the Tata Technologies, or how much of the company’s network that the attack affected. The letter suggests that the company doesn’t know it yet and that it looks at it:
“Further detailed study is undergoing consultation with experts to assess the basic cause and to take remedy actions as needed,” Tata said.
We also do not know if Crooks took any sensitive company or customer data (as is usual in ransomware -attack) or how long they lived before the inserted encryption.
Tata Technologies is part of the massive Indian conglomerate Tata Group, which counts more than 100 companies across a wide range of industries. As such, it is an important target for all sorts of cyber criminals, and for approx. Two years ago, Hive Ransomware hit Tata Power, India’s largest integrated electricity company. At that time, the company did not describe it as a ransomware attack, though it was forced to restore its systems.
“The attack detailed in the registered future report was one of several intrusion attempts at Indian critical infrastructure since 2020, with the latest attack on IT assets confirmed in October 2022,” Microsoft said at the time.
It was said that Tata Power did not pay the demand for ransom.
