Two police stations and a police cheese in the Bannu district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, were attacked in a coordinated assault late Friday night, officials have said.
Unidentified motorcycle -ridden militants reportedly threw two hand grenades at Khojri Police Post, Express News reported.
No damage was reported while the assailant’s identity and motives remain unclear. Police have launched a search operation and actively investigating the incident.
In response, the local residents armed themselves to help the police and announced that the elders in the area would take an active role in protecting the position.
At the same time, militants also targeted the Bakakhel and Ghoriwala police stations, which triggered shooting roads between attackers and security forces.
The simultaneous attacks in three different places spread panic throughout the district.
Security forces have launched a search operation to track the assailants and law enforcement authorities have increased security to prevent further attacks.
Local residents have expressed their obligation to cooperate with the police in the fight against terrorist threats and ensure peace in the area.
Last week, security forces successfully foiled a major terrorist attack on the Bannu canton in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and killed at least six terrorists, according to security sources.
The trial assault involved suicide bombers from the militant group of Tehreek-E-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), driving two explosive loaded vehicles into the cannon’s circumference and triggered massive explosions.
Meanwhile, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s Inspector of Police (IGP), Zulfiqar Hameed confirmed that the suicide bombs involved in the recent attacks on Darul Uloom Haqqania in Nowshera and in Bannu have been identified.
In a speech with the media, IGP HAMEED stated that studies of both events are going on and CCTV recordings from both places are secured for analysis. He added that the bombers were identified through forensic analysis of their remains.
In addition to identifying attackers, HAMEED revealed that the authorities had tracked the vehicles used in the Bannu attack.
He also revealed that foreign weapons were used in the incident, adding that investigations are underway to determine the origin of these weapons and how they entered Pakistan. “We are investigating the origin of the weapon and how they entered the country,” Hameed said.
The attacks that left 12 people martyrated in Bannu caused the government to compensate for the victims’ families. Each family of the martyrs received a control of a million rupees as financial assistance.
At its address, IGP also highlighted the security measures taken to restore peace in Kurram, a region that has seen an increase in terrorist activity.
He confirmed the arrest of over 100 suspects involved in disturbing peace. “Terrorist elements have begun to emerge in the Kurram events, and a separate strategy has been devised to tackle the situation,” Hameed said, expressing hope that peace in the area would soon be restored.
In addition, the Safe City project has been approved and is expected to be completed in the coming months to improve security throughout the region.
