Tether to stop usdt on omni, bch, kusama, eos, algorand when focus shifts to layer 2s

Tether has announced that it will run USDT on five less used blockchains after using these networks decreases.

Redemptions and token coin on Omni Layer, Bitcoin Cash’s Simple Ledger Protocol, Kusama, EOS and Algorand are set to stop September 1, 2025. Remaining tokens must be frozen the same day, according to a statement.

Together, the five networks only carry a spread of USDT’s approx. $ 156 billion float. Tether says the use of USDT on these networks, which it is teasing as playing a role in the company’s early growth, has fallen “significantly” in the last two years.

“Sunset support for these older chains allows us to focus on platforms that offer greater scalability, developer activity and community engagement – all key components to run the next wave of stableecoin resolution,” Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said in the statement.

The company will redirect its focus to LAG 2 networks such as Lightning Network and to newer blockchains that promise faster settlement and richer developer tool.

Tether has asked his customers who keep usd on the five networks to redeem their inventory as soon as possible or request the issuance of their symbols on a supported blockchain. Token holders can migrate their tokens through blockchain bridges or exchanges.

The lion’s share of Tether’s Fiat is currently circulating on Tron and Ethereum, which together make up over 95% of the total amount. Solana is the only other network with more than 1% of USDT’s delivery in circulation, according to rwa.xyz data.
