One of the things I miss at the 1980s, except for my youth, my waist and my belief in humanity, is Boombox. The boombox is one of the most important bits of sound technology ever made: it took music out of the bedroom or living room and into the streets, sound tracking of rap battles and break dancing and changing pop culture for the better.
And now it’s back! Back! BACK!
The new one we are back in the GB-001 looks like a boombox. It plays ties like a boombox. And it detects on these tapes like a boombox. But it also comes with some very welcome improvements during the 80s units that it is so clearly inspired by.
We are Rewind GB-001 BOOMBOX: Key features and pricing
The big differences this time are batteries and Bluetooth. The former means your Boombox does not have the battery-crunchy habit I remember from my long walked Sanyo: The 3,000 mAh rechargeable and user-replacement battery is good for 10 hours on speakers and 15 with headphones.
Secondly, there is Bluetooth 5.4 so you can stream from your smartphone if you would rather not have a Satchel full of audio tapes around with you. You can also connect an external audio source via 3.5mm jack or use an external microphone for recording.
It is much higher than my boombox ever was: 104W power with permission from Class D amplification.
Specen includes dynamic power control to reduce distortion, Dolby B-emulation for these noise-reduced cassettes and support of both normal (type I) and chrome (type II) bands. And at 6.81 kg (just under 15 kg) it is not so heavy that you do not want to take it everywhere.
The new Boombox is revealed today, May 15, in High End Munich 2025 Hi-Fi Show-Vi plans to track it down there asap. There is no confirmed release date yet, but the official price is very reasonable for £ 379 / € 449 (approximately $ 505 / AU $ 781).
