- ChatGPT now has an official app store for users
- OpenAI invites more contributions from developers
- Major apps like Apple Music are already available
Over time, we’ve seen services and apps like Kayak and Photoshop become tightly integrated into the ChatGPT interface, and now all these plug-ins are being brought together in a new app store interface – with OpenAI also opening the doors wide open for developers to contribute even more apps.
You can find the new Apps folder in ChatGPT’s main navigation pane on web and mobile, along with the existing links to all your projects and past chats. Or you can just go directly to the ChatGPT Apps directory. There are a few categories to browse and a search tool if you need something specific.
It will all be very familiar to anyone who has used an app store before: click or tap on a listing to see more details (including a privacy policy detailing how it handles your data) and to add the app to ChatGPT. Once that’s done, you’ll be able to call the app’s services by mentioning or selecting it in your prompts.
In its call to developers for new apps, OpenAI says it’s looking for apps that “extend ChatGPT conversations by bringing in new context and letting users take actions”. As you might expect, there are guidelines that developers must follow, and apps must receive OpenAI approval before appearing for ChatGPT users.
5 apps to try in ChatGPT
The best way to understand how these apps can extend the capabilities of ChatGPT is to try them out: we previously gave the Photoshop app a big thumbs up, so it’s a good app to start with if you haven’t already used it yet. The Canva app keeps you in the design and graphics and also gives you access to a number of visual tools inside ChatGPT.
Apple Music is also worth a look if you subscribe to the music streaming service: you can have ChatGPT create playlists for you, and have AI find songs based on specific themes and genres (much like the Spotify app). ChatGPT can already recommend tunes and mixes, but here you can add them directly to your Apple Music library.
Gmail isn’t the most exciting of plug-ins, but it can make a huge difference to your productivity if you’ve got ChatGPT looking through your inbox – you can actually hit inbox zero via some AI-powered summaries, highlights and draft replies.
Another road (or trail) recommendation: AllTrails is one of the best hiking apps in the business, and with this ChatGPT integration, you can ask questions and get advice based on data covering hundreds of thousands of trails.
