Seoul: South Korea’s Constitutional Court reintroduced Monday Prime Minister Han Duck-Soos powers, who marked the latest VRI in the country’s recent turbulent policy following his forgery as acting president almost three months ago.
He took over as acting leader from President Yoon Suk Yeol, who himself became impeached over his short -term declaration of martial arts in December. After the decision, he immediately returned to his position as acting president.
“I am grateful for the wise decision made by the Constitutional Court,” he said after the order, thanking members of the cabinet for their hard work while he was suspended.
“We will work together to prepare and implement answers to global changes and to ensure that South Korea continues to develop well in the era with great geopolitical transformation,” he said in the TV comments.
Yoon’s Martial Law Declaration threw Asia’s fourth largest economy and an important US military ally into his biggest political crisis for decades and triggered a management vacuum in the midst of spiral forgery, resigning and criminal charges of a number of top officials.
He had initially lasted less than two weeks in the position and was impeavized and suspended on December 27, 2024 after colliding with the opposition -led parliament by refusing to appoint three more justice to the Constitutional Court.
The Court’s judge today gave seven to one to knock down behavior.
Five of the eight Justices said the forgery was valid, but there were not enough reasons to build he when he did not violate the Constitution or the law, according to a declaration of law.
Two Justices decided that the forgery movement against he who served president at the time was invalid from the start when two -thirds of lawmakers in parliament did not transfer it. That points out that a righteousness voted to build he.
He, 75, had served in leadership positions for more than three decades under five presidents, both conservatives and liberals.
In a country that is sharply divided by partisan rhetoric, he had been seen as a rare example of an official whose varied career exceeded party lines.
Still, the opposition -led parliament accused him of not doing enough of averting Yoon’s decision to declare martial arts, an accusation he refused.
Finance Minister Choi Sang-Mok took over the position of acting president, while the cases of Yoon and he were considered by the Constitutional Court.
His parliament, he impliced over his alleged role in martial arts, as well as his rejection of appointing several Justices to the Constitutional Court and back to the special adviser aimed at Yoon and First Lady Kim Keon Hee.
He attended the only hearing in the case on February 19, when he refused any role in the Martial Law episode and called for the right to reject the forgery.
The unexpected introduction of martial arts on December 3 by President Yoon and the subsequent political upheaval sent shock waves through Asia’s fourth largest economy and raised concerns among allies such as the United States under former President Joe Biden, who had seen Yoon as a key partner in the effort to counter China and North Korea.
Martial Law In the end lasted only approx. Six hours after legislators defied a security command around parliament and voted to reject the declaration.
The Constitutional Court’s decision on Yoon’s impeachment is expected within a few days. Yoon is also facing a separate criminal trial of charges of leading a uprising by declaring a famp.
If yoon is removed, a new presidential election will be held within 60 days.
