Flooding in Nigeria’s Niger state this week has killed 151 people and forced several thousand from their homes, an emergency told Reuters Saturday.
Ibrahim Audu Hussaini, Director of Information at Niger State Emergency Management Agency, delivered the new death toll, which was previously reported on 117 Friday.
He added that over 500 households had been affected and more than 3,000 people displaced.
The flood event in the central city of Mokwa in Niger State took place on Wednesday night and continued into Thursday morning. Days later, rescuers were still picking through mud and dirt in search of bodies.
Nigeria is prone to flooding in the rainy season that began in April.
By 2022, the country’s worst wave of floods killed in more than a decade more than 600 people, expelled about 1.4 million and destroyed 440,000 ha (1.09 million Acres) agricultural land.
