The year 2021. It was how long since it was that Sony introduced the current A7 IV and raised the bar to medium-range mirror-free cameras.
The 33MP-full-frame model is still a remarkably skilled all-rounder, but it lost the top place in our best mirror-free camera guide to the Canon EOS R6 Mark II and consequently the smooth-better Nikon Z6 III.
However, there is potentially good news for Sony fans because we may have just seen the first leaked images of A7 IV’s successor, A7 V.
The new camera has shared what it says is two images of the Sony A7 V, which apparently reveals sensor resolution and welcome design upgrades from A7 IV.
There has been a lot of speculation this year about what the A7 V will bring to the table, and the leaked images that seem to pour cold water over dreams of a significant upgrade.
However, there is still much that we do not know and some speculation has to be taken with a pinch of salt, no matter how reliable the source. Let’s look at what is being said.
A middle -off mirror -free shakes up?
Mid-range mirror-free cameras tend to hit the price / performance Sweet Spot, and that’s exactly what the Sony A7 IV did four years ago.
Since then, however, Canon and Nikon have continued with new standards in this class – the EOS R6 Mark II and Z6 III are both shooting faster and their video specifications are bursting out of the water.
They have put the heat on the Sony, which is the original A7 series has long been one of the best sellers. So does the middle class get another shake if and when the A7 V arrives?
One of the leaked images shows the rear screen with the camera’s resolution that appears: 33MP large, 14MP medium, 8.2mp small. This suggests that the resolution of the A7 V is unchanged from 33mp A7 IV, which still beats rivals today.
What we do not know is whether it is the same sensor as before, a revised or a new species. E.g. NIKON Z6 III has a faster partially stacked 24MP sensor, while Premium models such as Nikon Z8 and Canon EOS R5 II have faster still fully stacked sensor.
Such a new kind of sensor would increase performance, effectively eliminating the rolling shutter distortion that plagues A7 IV in video and burst shooting, as well as forming the bedrock for improved performance that could see the A7 V fight or surpass its rivals and with a higher resolution sensor.
The second leaked image reveals a section of A7 V’s rear, which suggests that the A7 V could get a versatile 2-axis slope / vari-angle touch screen like in A1 II, although the grip may remain in similar style as existing A7 models.
The new camera has continued to speculate on other improvements that we can reasonably expect, and designates 20fps burst shooting, Sony’s AI-Chip for improved autofocus, Uncropped 4K 60fPS video, an EVF with higher resolution and improved image stabilization in the body.
It is also believed that the Sony A7 V is coming this year, potentially a release in October or November. There are words about a cannon EOS R6 Mark III, which is also tied to 2025, allegedly with the 32MP sensor we saw in the recent EOS C50. Such a flurry of releases would really shake the middle -central market.
