- iPhone 18 could come with a camera under the screen
- It’s a feature that has been rumored for several years now
- The change is apparently being tested by Apple
All iPhone launches are done for this year, which means we can turn our attention to 2026 and the iPhone 18 – and the latest rumor to emerge suggests that this could be the handset when Apple finally decides to add an under-display selfie camera.
According to well-known tipster Smart Pikachu (via Wccftech), Apple is at least testing under-display camera technology for the iPhone 18 phones, which would mean the screen notch could shrink in size or disappear entirely.
If you think that sounds familiar, it might be because it’s something that’s been rumored to be coming to the iPhone for years now. Perhaps 2026 will finally be the year when it really happens – although nothing is certain yet.
Other sources have also predicted that an under-display Face ID camera is on the table for the iPhone 18 phones, adding more credibility to this latest leak. We’ve also heard whispers that Apple is slowly working towards an all-screen iPhone.
Apple will not be the first
Other smartphone manufacturers have been experimenting with under-display cameras for years. You may remember the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, which was launched in 2021, came with an under-display camera on the main 7.6-inch display.
However, it’s worth noting that the camera wasn’t particularly good, and Samsung has since ditched the technology, at least for the time being. All Galaxy phones launched in 2025 have conventional selfie cameras, including the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Although Apple has not always been first in industry innovations, it tends to implement new technology in a way that is better than most or all of its competitors. Touch ID and Face ID would be two examples of that, and the foldable iPhone could well be another.
Well-placed sources have suggested that Apple may move up its iPhone launch schedule next year, with the Pro models arriving in September and the standard iPhone 18 appearing in March 2026. When these phones appear, keep an eye on the cameras.
