The last of us Season 3 is officially in the works at HBO. The incredibly popular TV adaptation was renewed in a third season in April 2025, so we’re being treated on another season of The last of us TV show sometime soon.
While we wait for it, there is plenty to keep you busy. Below I have covered what we know about The last of us‘Third season so far, including its probable role crew and history specifications. I also want to offer my prediction on its launch date and discuss whether a fourth season is needed to tell the full story depicted in The last of us part IIalias game where season 2 and 3 are based on.
Full spoilers follow before The last of us Season 2 and the second post in Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic video game franchise, then continue with your own risk.
The last of us season 3 release date: what we know
It can’t be for nothing. Season 3 is coming. #Thelastophus pic.twitter.com/q5hxyvk9o6April 9, 2025
From May 2025, The last of us Season 3 does not have a confirmed release date. Given the critically acclaimed HBO TV Originals next season has not started filming yet, it is not a huge shock.
However, I would not be surprised if lots of pre -production work have already been done. Script work, location mirroring, lining a movie plan, and many other development details have probably been running for months. If they have it, I would be amazed if main photography does not begin in earnest until 2025 ends.
What would it mean for Season 3’s possible launch? I think a release in the middle of 2027 is likely to be. Season 2 debuted just over two years after its predecessor ended, so if the series maintains this development course, an arrival in June or July 2027 for Season 3 is not out of the question.
The last of us season 3 trailer: Is there one?
No. As I said, main photography has not started yet, and even when it is in progress, it will be long before a trailer is released. When one is, I update this paragraph.
The last of us season 3 rummated role crews
Large spoilers immediately follow for The last of us Season 2.
Based on how last season ended, here are the actors (and the characters they portray) I expect to see again in The last of us Season 3:
- Bella Ramsey as Ellie
- Gabriel Luna like Tommy
- Isabela Merced like Dina
- Young Mazino as Jesse
- Kaitlyn Dever as Abby
- Danny Ramirez as Manny
- Spencer Lord as Owen
- Tati gabrielle like nora
- Ariela bars like flour
- Rutina Wesley as Maria
- Jeffrey Wright as Isaac
- Catherine O’Hara as Gail
- Robert John Burke as Seth
You may be surprised to see Mazino, Lord and Barer’s names among that quota. After all, their characters died – Jess, Owen and Mel – in the Season 2 final.
But with Season 3’s early episodes set to jump back in time (read more about this in the story section below), this trio has not met their death when Max Show’s third season premieres. The same can be said of Gabrieles Nora, who will still be alive in the period to be revised in Season 3’s opening chapters.
Unless Joel in the same way returns in flashback sequences, we certainly don’t see Pedro Pascal again. Joel met his end in The last of us Season 2 section 2, and while Pascal repeated his role in last season’s sixth episode, this post depicted the five years between the end of season 1 and the start of season 2.
There is also the potential for other surprising omissions. In a speech with Variety, O’Hara said she was told that her character, Gail, is not shown in Season 3, as it is not likely to spend much time in Jackson, Wyoming, alias town where Ellie and many of the show’s characters live. If gail does not appear, other supporting characters, including Seth and Maria, may not either.
As for newcomers in the series, there are a few key people in The last of us part II that did not appear in season 2 .. I will not spoil who they are, but given their importance to the story that will be told in Season 3, you can expect role herds about this couple to be made over time.
The last of us season 3 -Historic speculation
Full spoilers immediately follow for The last of us Season 2 and The last of us part II.
The last of us Season 3 doesn’t have a history synopsis yet. Based on how its ancestors ended – read my article, however, explained The last of us Season 2 has ended for more about what happened – and The last of us part II‘s story, we have a good idea of how things will pan.
As I mention in my final explanation, season 3 will switch to reverse gear and go back in time 72 hours to the period before and during his predecessor’s final. That’s because Season 2’s last episode ends with a stage starring in Abby, which takes place three days before her stormy Seattle Theater, where Ellie and Company are gathered in the seventh episode.
For those who haven’t played The last of us part IIAbby is not only the deuteragonist of that story, but also a player -controlled character to about half of the game’s overall playing time. Events that are centered around Abby Part II‘s full story.
What does it mean for The last of us Season 3? It will be ABBY-centered, with its opening chapters that probably show us what Abby was up to before Ellie and Dina arrive in Seattle, and then where Abby is in this three-day period.
Part II Do this so there is no need to suspect HBO’s live-action summary will not take a similar storytelling approach. This creature shows Abby’s side of the Seattle-based story that runs parallel to Ellie and Dina’s, before season 2 episode 7’s shocking penultimate scene brings them together.
As far as Abby’s side of the story involves, I will not spoil anything important here. But considering that there are many unanswered questions not to mention tale holes that need to be completed with regard to Abby, her friends, Serafites and Liberation Front-From Season 2, its follow-up has some heavy lifting to do from a narrative point of view.
Fortunately, it sounds like there will be more time to cover all the above. The interview of Collider In May, Co-ShowRunner and performing producer Craig Mazin said: “I think there’s a decent chance that Season 3 will be longer than Season 2 just because the way of this story and the opportunities it offers us is a little different.”
Of course, it could mean that one of the best max shows’ third season has only another post (eight) than its predecessor did (seven). Some fans were a little frustrated that Season 2 was shorter than the show’s debut excursion, so a rate with more chapters had to satisfy them. Season 2 included lots of brand new material that was not seen in the games so that season 3 could be contacted in the same way and by proxy have a higher episode count.
Where can I see the last of us’ first two seasons?
Depending on where you live, The last of us‘first two Seasons are available to stream on different platforms.

Will the last of us end with its third season?
It’s not officially confirmed yet, but The last of us Season 3 is not expected to be the last rate.
The last of us Seasons 2 and 3 should tell the full story that was depicted in The last of us part II. But when he spoke in February, HBO TV indicated Francesca Orsi that HBO’s adaptation of The last of us could run for four seasons.
In the same collider article I linked to in this guide’s plot department, Mazin also noted that “there is no way to end this tale in a third season. Hopefully we will earn our team enough to come back and finish it in a fourth”. Sounds like another season could be in the offen after the show’s third post.
But how will Mazin and the company extend out The last of us part II‘s story across three seasons originally, I suspected that if The last of us part II‘s story was wrapped in season 3, a fourth and last season may include plot elements that Naughty may have considered, however The last of us part III.
Right now, a third post in Naughty Dogs has been incredibly popular video game franchise not been announced. Naughty Dog – President Neil Druckmann has also said that fans should not “bet there is more” – ie. The continuation of Ellie’s story in another game – anytime soon.
Druckmann and his inner circle are the only ones who know if more than one history concept ever was devised to Part III. Nevertheless, if a third game will not be made, there is no reason why its plot elements cannot be wiped out and depicted in HBO’s TV adjustment instead.
That said, talking about section 457 of podcast in Sacred Symbols, the Druckmann indicated that if a fourth season is green -lit, it will simply pack the story told in Part II. The potential inclusion of brand new material sets during events in this game (and by proxy, its TV adaptation) aside, do not expect a possible fourth season will include post-Part II Narrative beats.
