- Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1 is out now
- This includes Android’s Big Material 3 Expressive Redesign
- These changes, however, do not roll out with the first version of Android 16
The company is warm on the heels of Google’s Android show and has now rolled its new look Android into Beta form.
If you have a compatible handset (which means a pixel phone from Google Pixel 6 onwards), you can now download Android QPR1 (Quarterly Platform Release 1) Beta 1, whose heading feature is the new material 3 Expressive Redesign.
This gives Android a whole new look with major visual changes on the lock screen, the launcher, the Quick Settings screen and messages. And these are not only static visuals, as material 3 expressively includes new movement effects.
More sizes, more tiles and new effects
In addition, this beta also contains various other changes, many of which have been excavated by 9to5Google. These include things like new lattice -size options for the Home screen, a reduction in the size of a glance -widget, the opportunity to add more quick settings tiles and the ability to add different effects – such as animated road considerations – to any wallpaper.
So there’s quite a lot here, even though the most important thing you’ll probably notice is just how different everything looks on Android 15.
If you have signed up for the Android 16 Beta program and have a Pixel 6 or newer, you must automatically access this beta. If not, you can sign up for the Android Beta page.
That said, this is a beta, it will not be as stable as a finished release, so unless you are desperate to try Android’s new look, we will suggest waiting.
Android 16 is expected to roll out in final form in the second quarter of the year – then by the end of June, but Material 3 Expressive Redesign seen in this beta will not land until the first QPR update to land later this year.
