Here’s everything you need to know about The Legend of Zelda movie.
The Legend of Zelda movie release date
This is Miyamoto. Due to production reasons, we are changing the release date of The Legend of Zelda live-action movie to May 7, 2027. This will be a few weeks later than the release time we originally announced, and we will use the extra time to make the movie as good as it…9 June 2025
The Legend of Zelda movie gets its theatrical release 7 May 2027.
Originally, the Nintendo and Sony Pictures feature had used Tri-Force to conjure up a March 26, 2027 launch. However, as the above X/Twitter post points out, it’s arriving a few weeks later than planned.
Principal photography began in New Zealand on November 4, 2025. According to the Film and Television Industry Alliance website, it is due to wrap up on April 7, 2026.
The Legend of Zelda Movie trailer: is there one?
No. And given that it won’t be released for another 18 months (at the time of this article’s initial publication), it will be a long time before we see one either. Once a trailer is released, I’ll update this section.
The Legend of Zelda Movie cast: confirmed and rumored
Possible spoilers follow The Legend of Zelda movie.
So far, only two actors have been formally announced as part of The Legend of Zelda movieCast:
- Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link
- Bo Bragason as Zelda
Confirming the couple’s involvement in July, Nintendo revealed that Bragason and Ainsworth would play Zelda and Link, aka two of the franchise’s most famous characters, in the film.
Of the pair, Bragason is undoubtedly the best known. She has inhabited roles in the Disney+ show Renegade Nelland Prime Video TV series The jetty and King and Conqueror. However, playing Hyrule’s princess in this live-action version of the popular game series is easily her biggest role to date.
Meanwhile, Ainsworth, who is hired to play Zelda franchise’s Master Sword-wielding male protagonist, will be recognizable to anyone who has seen Disney’s 2022 live-action/CGI remake of Pinocchio. Well, it will be his voice because he only voiced the titular character in that movie. Other roles he has had include Son of a Critch on CBC and Channel 4, and The Ghost of Bly Manor and The Sandman on Netflix.

There will be more cast announcements – official and leaked – in the coming weeks and months. In fact, fans believe that Dichen Lachman, who is starring Resignation on Apple TV, has secretly boarded the project as Zelda’s chief advisor Impa. Your evidence? In a leaked video posted on X/Twitter (see above), Bragason’s female hero is seen in conversation with someone who not only looks a lot like Impa, but also Lachman.
Other revelations will come in due course. We still don’t know who will play Zelda the series’ primary villain, Ganondorf, nor which supporting characters from Zelda the franchise’s repackaged catalog could be part of its ensemble. In fact, it depends on which games, which other people can appear The movie The Legend of Zelda‘s history has been influenced by. Speaking of which…
Speculation of The Legend of Zelda movie story
Potential spoilers follow The Legend of Zelda movie.
Not surprisingly, The Legend of Zelda moviethe synopsis of the story has not been revealed yet. However, based on its first-look images, it appears to be inspired by the game franchise’s two most recent entries: The Wild Spirit (BotW) and The tears of the kingdom (TotK).
One of the biggest clues we have is what Bragason’s Zelda is wearing. It’s a costume not unlike the primary outfit she has in the aforementioned games, so it’s more likely than not that BotW and TotK has at least partially inspired this film.
There is more evidence to suggest that this is also the case. The official still image of Link and Zelda in a lush setting is a clear nod to the idyllic Hyrulian fields, forests and hills that gamers explore in BotW and TotK. Add in the fact that the duo are actively working together – something they do throughout the aforementioned titles – and it stands to reason that this pair of games, which are among the most highly rated and loved games in Zelda series, are the top influencers on this project.
That is not to say otherwise Zelda games will not affect the story of the movie.
First, the franchise’s timeline has become increasingly complex to follow with each new entry and based on the outcome of events in TLegend of Zelda: Ocarina of Timesplit into three distinct timelines (per IGN) before BotW‘s arrival. Since BotW and TotK was released, Nintendo has updated the official timeline to show that these two titles sit independently of the other three timelines (thanks to vook.net for the screenshots).
It means if The Legend of Zelda movie is based on BotW and TotKit will not take signals from others Zelda game, right? Not necessarily. After all, other Nintendo movies – both recent and upcoming releases, which I’ll get to in the next section – have selected elements from various titles in their own game series. So it is possible that this film could do something similar and include e.g. aspects of Skyward Sword, A link to the pastor The Wind Waker as part of its narrative.
Perhaps the most important question of all, however, is: will Link talk? He’s never uttered a word in the game series, so will Ainsworth follow in the footsteps of the franchise’s silent male protagonist or give him a voice? Speaking to comicbook.com, director Wes Ball declined to comment, so we’ll have to wait for its first trailer or the film itself to find out.
Will The Legend of Zelda movie get a sequel?
We don’t know. Nintendo hasn’t discussed the prospect of making a follow-up, and realistically, a lot depends on how successful The movie The Legend of Zelda is.
If – and it’s a big if – The Legend of Zelda movie is as commercially successful as TSMBMis it inevitable that a sequel will be made. Until it arrives in May 2027, however, this is a question we cannot answer definitively.
