The police ask for compensation during the terrorist wave

PESHAWAR:

As terrorism resurfaces in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, the provincial police have sought a special allowance for their personnel from the government, with the proposal estimated to cost around Rs4.2 billion. per month.

The province has registered a total of 1,588 terror-related cases in 14 districts by 2025.

The Central Police Office (CPO) submitted a summary to KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi stating that the provincial government prioritized improving police capacity and welfare in the face of terrorism and security challenges.

“Due to the government’s targeted efforts and effective administrative measures, not only has the law and order situation improved, but the government’s overall public image has also been strengthened,” the summary read.

It further noted that police personnel received special financial incentives, including a terrorism allowance, in light of the serious risks, operational responsibilities and constant exposure to threats they face on a routine basis.

The summary said these steps were aimed at boosting morale in the force and helping officers carry out their responsibilities with greater confidence.

It added that the KP Police remained persistently engaged in confronting terrorists and insurgents, often putting their lives at risk due to their frontline responsibilities.

“The KP police have inflicted untold casualties, including loss of precious lives and serious injuries,” reads the summary.

The document maintained that the duty of police officials in KP remained extremely risky, exposing them to threats of bombings, targeted attacks and other violent activities by extremist elements.

It stated that the provincial police carried out their duties without additional financial incentive, despite the challenging security environment and the operational nature of their duties, in view of the continuous high-risk tasks carried out by all cadres of the force.

It requested a special allowance equal to one basic salary to be given to all ranks of the provincial force.

“The award of this allowance will not only recognize the extraordinary services and sacrifices of the KP Police, but will significantly improve their morale, efficiency and motivation in conducting critical security operations across the province,” the summary said.

The document noted that the special allowance would amount to Rs4.2 billion. per month.
