ISLAMABAD:

The Senate on Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution condemning Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s remarks about a plan to ally with India and other countries to fight Muslim nations.

The resolution moved by PPP’s Palwasha Mohammad Zai Khan deplored the continued provocative steps and statements of the Israeli leadership that threatened regional and international peace and stability, including the latest statement of forming “alliances” against Muslim nations.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country “wants to create a whole system — essentially a kind of hexagon of alliances — around or within the Middle East,” the Times of Israel reported.

Netanyahu listed India, Greece, Cyprus and “unnamed Arab, African and Asian countries”, the report added.

“The intention here is to create an axis of countries that see the reality, the challenges and the goals in the same way as opposed to the radical axes,” he was quoted as saying.

The Indian Prime Minister is also set to visit Israel on Wednesday (today).

In its resolution adopted today, the Senate also condemned any attempt by Israel to undermine “the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of fraternal Islamic countries and rejected” the announcement by Israel to recognize the independence of the so-called Somaliland region of Somalia.

The resolution took strong exception to statements perceived as undermining regional stability and international legal norms.

The House criticized Israel’s policies and actions, citing violations of international law, the UN Charter, relevant UN resolutions and the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice.

The Senate rejected any attempt to change the legal or historical status of the occupied Palestinian territories, including holy sites, and condemned the expansion of settlements and displacement of Palestinians.

The House deplored what it described as continued provocative moves and statements by Israeli leadership that could threaten regional and international peace.

The resolution also condemned any efforts aimed at undermining the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Islamic countries, while rejecting Israel’s reported announcement of recognition of Somaliland’s independence, describing it as inconsistent with international principles.

The Senate urged the international community to ensure accountability and end impunity for acts that violate international humanitarian and human rights laws.

It demanded full Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories and called for increased, sustained and unimpeded humanitarian aid to Palestinians, particularly in Gaza.

Parliament stressed the need for early recovery and reconstruction efforts and reiterated Pakistan’s historic and unwavering support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.

The resolution reaffirmed support for the establishment of an independent, viable and contiguous State of Palestine based on pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
