If you’re feeling fancy this Christmas, treat your guests to a turducken, a Cajun creation in which a chicken is stuffed inside a duck, then duck is stuffed inside a turkey*. Mixx Audio seems to have created the audio equivalent: its new Analog+ all-in-one music system has an integrated CD player built into a turntable, in the center of the record, so they are concentric circles.
“We wanted to create something really distinctive,” says Mixx Audio CEO Prash Vadgama, and I’d say that’s mission accomplished. It’s very strange, but it makes sense for people who are short on space and want a single do-it-all device.
MIXX Analog+: Key features and specifications
Inspired by the look of 1980s hi-fi components and available in black or white finishes, the Analog+ is a fully automatic turntable with an Audio-Technica AT3600L cartridge and the ability to play both 7-inch and 12-inch records at 33 or 45 rpm.
There is both Bluetooth 5.3 and an aux output. Everything can be controlled via the included remote control.
It’s a simple design with little visual clutter; all controls are mounted on the front, where there is also a small display that shows you track progress and mode selection. But although it is simple, it is also very unusual because of the top-loaded CD mechanism in the middle of the turntable.
The CD player of course works with normal CDs, but it also plays audio and data CD-R and CD-RW discs. It plays WAV, MP3 and WMA files at up to 16-bit/44.1kHz and 48kHz for WAV files.
It’s very strange, and as far as I know it’s the first of its kind (Mixx certainly claims the same): there have been plenty of combo LP/CD players from all sorts of companies, but they have the CD transport as a more obviously separate mechanism to the turntable.
Whether this is inspired or insane will emerge as the reviews come in, but you can’t deny Mixx’s ability to think differently here.
Analog+ is available now for £299 (approx $400 / AU$605).
* I wonder: what combinations were tried before they ended up with that one?
