Nintendo Switch 2 Edition play as Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom May have a bit of an ugly catch as the physical versions could potentially just be original switch cartridges with a download code attached.
Reportedly, a Nintendo UK representative had sent an E email that “Yes, we can confirm that the upgrades will be download codes.” The response was divided into x / twitter of ‘does it play?’ Account (via Eurogamer).
Another popular X / Twitter user, Wario64, chimet in with their take, pointing out that customer support representatives are not always the highlight of accuracy. Wario64 adds that there is no indication of the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition boxes as a download is required at all.
But it’s not the full story
In any case, it seems to be some mixed messages going on. Physical Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Boxes Stat: “This Nintendo Switch 2 edition includes the Nintendo Switch game and the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade package.”
‘Consists of’ is the key word there, which suggests that the upgrade may be coming to the cartridge itself as opposed to a separate code that does not quite match what the above Nintendo UK rep had suggested.
Nintendo’s support site provides more details describing Switch 2’s cartridges as ‘Game Key Card’: “Game-Key card differs from regular game cards because they do not contain the full waste data,” it says. “Instead, it’s game-key card your ‘key’ to download the full game to your system via the Internet.”
It adds that an internet connection is required when launching the game for the first time, but can be played offline at any time after that on your console. However, it is true if the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition game will specifically follow this logic.
