- UK Startup Somni claims to have invented the world’s first “battery -free streaming earplugs for sleep”
- The earbuds are small and wireless, made to be comfortable to use in any sleeping position
- According to Somnibuds, these sleep buds never need to be charged – but a few things remain unclear
A British start -up claims to have found the perfect solution to many sleeping evil. Whether you are struggling with insomnia or need a small white noise to fall asleep, these new earplugs can potentially help.
Somnibuds are flat and small streaming earplugs made to be used while you sleep. Thanks to their unusual form, they are apparently optimized for each sleeping position. And even though they are completely wireless, Somnibuds also claim that you never have to go out of your way to recharge them.
Then these sleep buds are a strong new alternative to the loop dream and how do they work? Here’s all we know so far.
What are Somnibuds and how do they work?
Somnibuds stream earplugs to sleeping, made from the British start -up Somni. They are not the only sleeping earplugs or earplugs out there – alternatives such as Bose Sleepbuds IIHas been around for a while with recent challengers such as the aforementioned Loop Dream. However, Somni claims that its new buds have a few things that the competition does not offer.
The biggest standout feature is the fact that these earplugs do not have a battery. They are also wireless, which possibly creates a confusing combination. How can battery -free hardware be wireless and yet never need to be recharged?
Admittedly, the technical details are still pretty scarce here, but Somni claims you don’t have to use a charging case or a similar device. Instead, place Somnimat, which is a charging mat made specifically for these earplugs, under your pillow or your mattress. While you are sleeping, the earphones will wirelessly connect to the charge, which allows them to drive all night long.
On paper, this sounds great. However, it is unclear how reliable the connection between the mat and the earbuds will be. Will this charging style work in each sleeping position? What if you roll over to the other side of the bed? These are some of the things we look forward to exploring during some personal listening, but the characters from our friends at Shortlist (who have tried a few) are very promising.
Somnibuds are 3 mm thin and have a flat, discreet design that looks like it would be comfortable to sleep in – yes, at least as comfortable as sleeping with something in your ears can ever be. Start -up claims that earphones are a quarter of the size of traditional Bluetooth sleep.
Somnibuds do not require an app to be used and can be paired with any kind of sound, including Spotify, podcasts, movies and white noise apps.
How can you try somnibuds?
So how can you actually try these? This is where more questions are starting to emerge. The ears are not yet available for sale, but we know a few things about what’s waiting for them this year.
Somni promises that Somnibuds will be available via Kickstarter in “Late Summer”, so we can’t have too long to wait now.
But if you are really excited about these, you can pay $ 1 to get a 33% discount that you can use when they come out. You just have to reserve somewhereAlthough Somni says that only 300 early backers are allowed to sign up.
Somnibuds (presumably complete with the charge) will be priced at $ 229 / £ 224 (around AU $ 465) without a discount and $ 199 / £ 149 (approx. AU $ 310) with 33% discount. Early backers will also receive a bonus pair of earplugs.
As with any kickstarter or crowdfunded project, all the usual warnings apply and it is important to be careful. We have no guarantee that these earplugs will market at all, and it is unclear when they will be fully available for sale.
But if you are fighting for shuteye and looking for some earplugs designed specifically for sleep, they may be a new competitor to fit in if the charge-free requirements keep up under the real world.
