- A thinner, brighter screen is rumored for the iPhone Air 2
- We may also see a larger battery on the device
- The phone is expected to appear sometime in 2027
The iPhone Air is certainly a nice looking smartphone, but rumor has it that it hasn’t sold that well for Apple. Now, a new group of leaks point to the upgrades we might see on the iPhone Air 2 model, which is expected sometime in 2027.
These leaks come from The Elec (via 9to5Google), and start with a prediction that the iPhone Air 2 will use CoE (Color filter on Encapsulation) technology in its display. It’s the same technology planned for the foldable iPhone, and crucially it would mean an upgrade in brightness.
That’s not all: the brighter screen could also be thinner, which means more room for a larger battery for the iPhone Air 2. In our iPhone Air review, we described the battery life as “solid”, so improvements in this area would certainly be welcome.
If Apple is able to make the display panel thinner, it could also make the phone as a whole thinner rather than making the battery bigger – but given that the iPhone Air is already only 5.6mm from front to back (which beats the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge), an increase in battery size and capacity might be a better idea.
Another camera too
The other major bugbear that people seem to have with the iPhone Air is that there is only a single rear camera. We’ve already seen rumors that Apple will address this with the next model by adding an extra camera with an ultra-wide lens.
Better battery life and improved cameras would go a long way to address the most notable shortcomings of the iPhone Air, although for the sake of balance we should point out that the handset certainly has its fans too.
There have been reports that Samsung has abandoned plans to launch a Samsung Galaxy S26 Edge following poor sales of the current Edge model – suggesting that consumer demand for super-slim phones is rather soft.
Nevertheless, Apple seems committed to at least one more iPhone Air model. However, we may have to wait until 2027 to see: Apple is rumored to be planning a launch schedule this year, with the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max appearing in 2026, and the iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 waiting until 2027.
