Thiel College Tennis Player Toby Atwood Death at 1 p.m. 21 After collapsing mid-race

Toby Atwood, an increasing senior at Thiel College and member of the women’s tennis Team, died suddenly this weekend after collapsing under a half marathon in Pennsylvania, the school officials confirmed.

21 year old Pennsylvania Native attended Presque Isle Half Marathon in Erie Sunday when she collapsed and died. Atwood’s cause of death was not immediately known.

“Toby went into her senior year at Thiel College and was a skilled student, athlete and leads throughout her time at the college. Her presence touched so many lives and she will be deeply missed,” said Vice President of Student Life and Athletics Michael McKinney in a letter sent to society.

“During this heartbreaking time, we mourn for Toby and expand our heartfelt sympathy to her family, friends, classmates, teammates, coaches, instructors and everyone who knew her.”

Atwood was described as a “standout” student that maintained a 4.0 GPA as business administration and accounting double major. Atwood attended Thiel College on a full scholarship and served as president of Zeta Tau Alpha and was recently introduced in Chi Eta Sigma, National Commerce Honor Society.

“Toby was a light in everyone’s life. There was never a boring moment with her and she was always there for the people she loved when they needed it,” the women’s fraternity said in a statement.

“Toby really made her mark while she was with us. She was seen as a leader, role model and mentor. She was strong, elastic and never afraid to speak her mind. There will forever be a hole in our hearts and our chapter without her. She has touched so many lives.”

Atwood was a co-captain for the women’s tennis team. As a beginner, she won four singles and two doubles matches.

“Toby went into her senior year at Thiel College and was a skilled student, athlete and leads throughout her time at the college. She was recently honored by Intercollegiate Tennis Association For her academic success – her second honor marks such honor in the past two seasons.
