- HighPoint RocketStor 8631CW gives you 64 GB/S GPU tape width – no drivers or software necessary
- Real PCIE GEN5 X16 LANES DELIVERED directly to your GPU through a single Copprink cable
- Suitable for double or triple -slot GPUs from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel – No Compatibility Tricks Required
External GPU (EGPU) cabinets are not new, but HighPoint’s Rocketstor 8631CW has entered the stage with an unusually aggressive pitch.
The company says this external GPU setup delivers a direct PCIe Gen5 X16 connection to a full-size graphics card via a proprietary 1-meter Copprlink CDFP cable.
In addition to its bandwidth for GPUS for Desktop-Class, this device supports plug-and-play, OS-AGNOSTIC and is not dependent on software or drivers.
A closer look at the hardware setup
In the heart of the system is Rocket 1634D Host Interface Card, which uses Broadcom’s PEX 89048 contact to maintain its Gen5 x16 -link with up to 64 GB/s transfer speed.
The map fits in low-profile systems that measure 68.9 mm x 165 mm and support a single CDFP channel.
It supports LED indicators for visual feedback on connecting status and secure boot at both hardware and software levels.
Connected it is Rocketstor 8631C chasssis that uses Asteralab’s PCIe 5.0 Retimer to maintain signal integrity.
The cabinet supports a full height, full length, double or triple-slot GPU from any major supplier, including NVIDIA, AMD and Intel.
It can handle power loads up to 600W and includes real-time power surveillance and an advanced double-fan cooling system with programmable smart fan control for thermal problem notes. There is also a back panel mute button if the audible alarms get too talk.
Its dimensions are 370 mm x 170 mm x 88 mm, making it large enough to house an RTX 5090-class card, but still compact enough not to overwhelm a desk.
This setup is aimed at workflows where stability and zero configuration environments are compulsory-thinking AI model training, 8K editing or riding of business quality companies.
But in a world where laptops are increasingly equipped with heavy built -in GPUs, this fence feels more like a solution for edge cases.
A creator who is looking for the best laptop for video editing or the best laptop for Photoshop is likely to find lots of skilled systems that do not need such setup, especially when taking into account portability, price and simplicity.
That said, as integrated GPUs and compact systems are improved, the need for such a solution is narrowed and costs increase significantly.
You need a PCIE slot in your system, a matching full-power GPU and a compelling reason to justify the cost-but if you are dead to pull the RTX 5090-class power around without a tower, this may be the only hardware currently up to the job.
HighPoint Rocketstor 8631CW is currently selling on the HighPoints Website for $ 1,999.
