- UFS 5.0 has been revealed as a successor to UfS 4.x storage
- This new storage standard has almost twice as quickly read and writing speeds as its predecessor
- This massive speed increase could be particularly advantageous for AI
Storage speeds are not something we are talking about much in the context of smartphones – nor are they probably an important factor in buying decisions for most people. But that may soon change, as in AI’s era, faster storage can be very advantageous – and a very quick new storage standard has just been announced.
The joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) has just announced that UFS 5.0 is coming soon (via Telefonarena). This is the next version of Universal Flash Storage and it is ready to give a massive boost at speed.
According to this notice, it will be able to be able to data transfer rates of 10.8 GB per year. Second, which is almost double of 5.8 GB per second. Second offered by UfS 4.0. This increase can be beneficial every time your phone needs to read or write things on its storage, but it can be particularly useful for AI.
In fact, it is 10.8 GB per Second speed specifically reached to meet the requirements of AI, so with UFS 5.0 AI apps and features could work noticeably faster -and when AI tools become more advanced and demanding, it will be all the more important.
In addition to higher speeds, the UFS 5.0 also promises effective performance, so it should not drain your phone’s battery too much and it will be backward compatible with UFS 4.x hardware.
So when you buy your next phone, you can first check if it includes UFS 5.0 storage or not as it can be an important differentiation.
Uncertain availability
Unfortunately, right now it is unclear when the first phones with UFS 5.0 will land as no smartphone manufacturers have yet announced such a handset. But based on previous form, there is a good chance that Samsung will be among the first to embrace it – so maybe we see it in the Samsung Galaxy S26 series.
Apple, meanwhile, takes the typical Apple approach not to use the UFS standards at all and instead choose slower storage, so there’s not much hope that the iPhone 18 series will adopt it.
Google may be with Pixel 11, but on the Pixel 10 series you get different storage speeds depending on how much storage you choose, so it is possible that higher capabilities get UFS 5.0, while lower capabilities will have previous versions.
Hopefully, however, UFS 5.0 will be widely and quickly adopted in the smartphone world because it sounds like a worthy upgrade.
