A greater consolidation is underway in the China Semi -Leading Industry, after two key players, Hyon and Sugon, announced their merger.
The trade represents an effort to strengthen China’s abilities in high-performance computing, which potentially poses a serious challenge for American chipmaking giants Intel, AMD and NVIDIA.
While the merger occurs formidable on paper, its global impact remains uncertain due to technical, political and market restrictions.
An integrated force in supercomputing
This involves the use of SMT4 (at the same time multithreading with four threads per core), a technology that only IBM has implemented in scale, starting with its Power7 architecture in 2010.
Hysten’s Chip Development Roots Tracks Back to a License Agreement with 2016 with AMD, giving it access to Zen 1 CPU design and X86-64 architecture.
Although the resulting chips labeled as Dhyana have been modest compared to AMD’s EPYC line, they have seen adoption in China, including support from Linux core developers and Tencent.
Sugon has also used Dhyana processors in different systems, including a supercomputer that once ranked 38. On the Top500 list.
While these chips are not on par with the world’s fastest processors, they reflect long -term cooperation and a continued push for Chinese alternatives.
On the political front, both Hysten and Sugon remain at the US Bureau of Industry and Security’s Unity List.
This term limits access to US technologies in relation to national security concerns and raises questions about how much the new device can innovate independently of US intellectual property.
For the time being, the new chips remain the power and competitiveness unclear.
However, the technical leap required to compete with AMD’s thread ripper or Intels Xeon is often quoted among the world’s fastest CPUs is significant.
