Islamabad:
The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Poverty Fighting and Social Security was told on Tuesday that over 18,000 NGOs operate nationwide, but only approx. 1,000 were officially registered how the vast majority of people fly under the radar.
The Committee expressed serious concern about the presence of unregistered NGOs, called them a potential threat to sensitive national affairs and recommended formulation of a national framework to regulate the sector.
During the meeting, officials also informed the Committee on progress with various welfare projects, especially with regard to the deadlines given for their end.
The Committee expressed serious concern about the delays in timely execution and required greater accountability.
Expressions of dissatisfaction over the incompleteness of a pilot project to be completed in July called the committee secretary financing and secretary of industries and production should perform in the next session.
The committee also called on the governor of the State Bank of Pakistan and head of private banks to appear for the panel in the upcoming meeting to review coordination issues linked to poverty fight programs.
Briefing of the Committee on the Prime Minister’s Ramazan Nut -Nut Aid Package revealed officials that 2.7 million out of 3.5 million deserved families had received help through digital wallets.
