Karachi:
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has directed the Karachi-Water and Sewerage Board to ensure that the TP-I component of the S-III COOK project is fully operational at the end of August and that the work on TP-IV is accelerated to end it within a year. He issued these instructions at a high -level meeting held in CM House.
The S-III project is one of the most significant efforts to tackle City’s wastewater problems, with 400 to 450 million gallon of wastewater generated daily, of which much is written off untreated in the rivers Lyari and Malir. The project aims to intercept, treat and safely dispose of wastewater to protect the environment, sea life and public health.
The most important components of the project include transmission packages in the Lyari and Malir basins, upgrading existing treatment plants and construction of new facilities.
TP-I involves rehabilitation and expansion of an old wastewater treatment plant and is expected to be ordered in August 2025. TP-IV, meanwhile, is a comprehensive wastewater treatment and recycling system that includes flow and quality monitoring in different places.
A recent industrial study revealed that over 3,600 industries in the area require about 42 million gallons of water daily, highlighting the importance of this initiative to integrate effective wastewater control into the city’s infrastructure.
The meeting was informed that 67 percent of TP-IS civilian works have been completed, with only electrical work left, which depends on the availability of funds. The Minister of the Minister also ordered the local Minister of Government and mayor to personally monitor progress to ensure that the work has been completed within the stipulated timeframe.
