- Cybergenws found a larger database that belonged to Sydney tools that are unsecured online
- The exposed employee and customer data
- As many as 34 million orders could be postponed
Millions of Australians (and possibly others) may have had their sensitive information postponed on the Internet due to a leak from a larger retailer.
Researchers from Cygenerws Uncovered a huge exposed clickhouse database belonging to Sydney Tools, an Australian retailer who specializes in power tools, hand tools and industrial equipment for traders and DIY enthusiasts.
The database reportedly includes items that belong to both Sydney Tools employees (current and former) and customers.
Millions of customers
For employees, there are more than 5,000 items that contain full names, employment, wages and sales targets. Since Sydney tools apparently have about 1,000 employees, it is safe to assume that most of the items in this category fall on former employees.
While payment or bank information was not exposed here, there are still plenty of “ingredients” for a dangerous phishing or cocktail in identity theft.
Apart from employees, the leaked database also spilled more than 34 million online purchase registers.
These contained people’s names, e -mail addresses, home addresses, phone numbers and ordered items, making this part of the leak objectively worse.
“The leaked data are sensitive as they included extensive personally identifiable information in large quantities as well as sensitive information about which customers bought expensive goods and their employees’ wages,” the researchers said.
The Cygenerws The report was published at the end of March 2025 and said the archive at the time of the press was still postponed on the Internet and leaking data. The researchers said they were trying to get in touch with Sydney tools to get them to close the archive but were not successful.
Unprotected databases continue to be one of the biggest causes of data leaks today.
Sydney Tools offers a wide range of products from larger brands, including tools for construction, car and woodworking applications. The company runs both online and through physical stores throughout Australia.
