- MathWorks confirmed to like a ransomware -attack
- It brings systems online but the process takes time
- No threat actors have yet taken responsibility
Mathworks, a prominent mathematical computer software developer, has confirmed to suffer a ransomware attack that paralyzed its operations.
In a statement published on a dedicated status page, the company said the attack happened almost two weeks ago and it has still not been fully remedied. The company for the time being began to bring back operations online.
“Mathworks experienced a ransomware attack. We have notified federal law enforcement of this case. The attack affected our IT systems,” the status page reads. “Some of our online applications used by customers were not available, and certain internal systems used by the staff became inaccessible, beginning on Sunday, May 18. We have brought many of these systems back online and continue to bring back other systems online with the help of cybersecurity experts.”
Negotiations on an ongoing basis?
The latest update sent on May 27 says Matlab Answers, Cloud Center and File Exchange has been restored for existing users. The latter operates “in a broken down state with file view and GITHUB Sync not yet activated.”
Mathworks is best known for Matlab and Simulink, two popular solutions used worldwide for data analysis, simulation and model -based design in engineering and scientific applications, with its products used by more than 100,000 organizations and more than 5 million customers worldwide.
At the time of the press, there was no information about the perpetrators, as there are no threat actors yet who have yet assumed responsibility for the attack and crucial details are still missing.
We do not know who the threat actors are or whether they stole any sensitive business or customer data from Mathworks’ systems, just as the usual practice of ransomware attacks.
One of the options is that attackers are currently negotiating with the company, which is why the details are kept hidden.
