The Tor project, known for its very anonymous Tor browser, has just been expanded to VPNs.
The company’s first “experimental” Android VPN app is currently in beta and available in the Google Play Store.
Baptized Tor VPN, the app seems to prioritize avoiding censorship and increasing online privacy life.
Tor is now actively looking for testers to try it and report errors.
Although you can already give it a trip for yourself, the developers warn that the app is still in its early days and is not ready for high risk yet, which means it cannot compete with the best VPN providers.
How does Tor VPN work?
The new Tor VPN appeared in the Google Play Store with a little to no fanfare, and its most important home on the internet outside this store list is the project’s GitHub archive.
It is completely open source, which means its code is public.

According to the Play Store page, TOR VPN will offer privacy at the network level. It hides your real IP address, which is a basic feature offered by any virtual private network (VPN) software, but it uses the Tor network to protect against censorship and privacy threats.
The app also gives you access to shared tunneling, which means you can choose which apps are directing through the Tor network.
Each app that reviews Tor gets its own IP, which means outsiders cannot connect your overall online activity across multiple apps.
What is the difference between Tor VPN and the browser?
The biggest difference between Tor Browser and the new Tor Android app is the way it integrates with your device and routes traffic.
Tor Browser is essentially a custom version of Firefox that only protects your activity within the browser. It forces all your browser traffic through the Tor network, hides your IP and encrypts your connections via at least three encryption layers while dividing requests across multiple volunteer-driven relays (or nodes).
On the other hand, Tor Vpn Works at system level. It allows you to choose which apps send their traffic through the Tor network. Each app can get its own unique “circuit” and finish IP, making it harder to link your activity across different services. Effectively expands VPN Tor’s anonymity beyond just web browsing.
Under the cap, Tor VPN Beta is also built on recent infrastructure. It uses Arti, the Tor project’s next re-implementation. This infrastructure is designed to be safer than the older C-based code that drives the Tor browser.
The app also includes built -in bridges such as OBFS4 (disguises your traffic as random data) and snowflake (disguises your traffic as a video call). These transform Tor Traffic into other types of data to bypass censorship.
The app is in beta and it can be risky
The Tor VPN app is still experimental, delicious possibly information and is not quite ready for high risk use.
The company warns: “If you are facing extreme monitoring risks, we recommend using Tor VPN Beta.”
Currently, it’s more of a test space and the app is still clear in its infant. We will have to wait and see how Tor’s Signature VPN develops and how it compares with leading VPN solutions.
