Torrential Rain Floods Lahore, killing five over Punjab

Lahore: Power Rain that began at 1 p.m. 05 on Thursday, lahore swollen for over six hours, submerged low -lying areas, paralyzed traffic and causes structural damage in several districts over Punjab.

The rain stopped around 1 p.m. 11:30, but drainage work of WASA teams is still underway.

Nishtar Town received the heaviest rainfall and registered 182 mm, while rainwater entered home in Dharampura, Shah Jamal, Choburji and the surrounding sites. Vehicles and motorcycles were stranded in deep water, especially in underlations and along major roads.

A house and a mosque in Shah Jamal were also flooded. Wall and roof collapse events were reported in Lahore, Okara, Sheikhupura and Pattoki, leaving five people died, including a woman and two children, and wounded several others.

In Sheikhupura, two children-5-year-old Fatima and 2-year-old Arham were killed when their home took collapse. In Pattoki, a 55-year-old woman named Salma Bibi and a 12-year-old boy named Sujawal lost their life in separate events.

In Lahore, a boy was electrocuted while bathing in rainwater collected in a vacant plot near Lari Adda.

Lahores Katchi Abadis and understocks were greatly affected, including areas around Kalma Chowk, Ferozepur Road, Haji Camp, Canal Road and Harbanspura. Despite ongoing drainage efforts, many neighborhoods remained waterproof.

Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) reported power cuts of 142 feed and disturbed the power supply in many areas. CEO Lesco called on citizens to avoid power bars and infrastructure in wet conditions, and the said restoration work would begin when the rain stopped.

WASA CEO Ghaffar Ahmed visited affected areas and instructed staff to quickly clear major roads. Punjab Minister Maryam Nawaz valued WASA staff who worked through the storm and ordered uninterrupted operations until all roads were cleared.

The meteorological department has predicted that monsoon rains will continue with spaces until July 13, with several rainfall expected in Lahore, Jhelum, Sialkot, Narowal and Hafizabad for the next 24 hours.
