Traffic police collects Rs 4.46 billion. from challans in Gujranwala

The fines almost triple compared to the previous year; stricter enforcement leads to a decrease in traffic accidents

The city’s traffic police reported issuing more than 750,000 citations for traffic violations and collecting over Rs 4.46 billion in fines during 2025, officials said on Tuesday.

Authorities attributed a significant drop in traffic accidents to stricter enforcement of traffic laws throughout the city.

According to official data, the City Traffic Police, under the supervision of Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Ayesha Butt, intensified enforcement in the inner city and areas falling within the bypass limits.

Special focus was placed on helmet use, seat belt compliance, tinted windows, non-standard and missing license plates, unregistered vehicles, driving without a license, driving by minors and other violations.

In addition to issuing claims, cases were registered against hundreds of vehicle owners for serious violations of the Traffic Act.

Officials said that during 2025, the traffic police issued a total of 168,470 driving licenses, the majority of them to motorcyclists.

An estimated 100,000 motorcycles ply in Gujranwala and the CTO’s office launched a targeted drive to ensure riders obtained valid licenses.

The enforcement campaign resulted in over 750,000 recorded traffic violations during the year.

These included 8,808 cases of one-way offences, 19,996 offenses recorded under smog-related restrictions and 63,090 challenges for not wearing a helmet.

Thousands of motorists were also fined for driving without a licence, using black-tinted papers on vehicle windows, one-wheelers and illegal parking.

Officials said fines collected during the year exceeded Rs 4.46 billion, almost three times higher than the previous year – reflecting both increased enforcement and tougher penalties.

Under revised rules, minimum fines were raised to Rs2,000, leading to criticism from sections of the public.
