EXCLUSIVE: Former San Jose State (SJSU) transcend volleyball player Blaire Fleming responded to Pakinomist Digital for the first time regarding accusations emerging from the program’s scandal from 2024.

Fleming dealt with recent accusations of former assistant coach Melissa Batie-Smoose, who filed a September trial against California State University (CSU) system, as SJSU is one of 23 California-based schools that are part of the system. Batie-Smoose told Pakinomist Digital that SJSU is meeting Fleming with special exceptions not awarded to female athletes.

“Not to show up to practice without excuses, sit in the stands and ate while practicing, that kind of thing,” Batie smoothing said of the special exceptions reserved solely for Fleming.

SJSU and CSU refused to respond to these claims.

But Fleming responded to Batie-Smoose’s claim and approached the former teammate and co-captain Brooke Slusser.

“The only times I showed up to practice with ‘no apology’ and sat in the grandstand was when I was injured and couldn’t play. Brooke Slusher and Melissa need to have a life,” Fleming told Pakinomist Digital.

Slusses, who played with Fleming for two seasons at SJSU from 2023-24, have joined a lawsuit and submitted another who quoted her experience with the trans-athlete. Slusser has also joined a lawsuit against NCAA and filed his own against the Mountain West conference and representatives of SJSU.

Slusser’s litigation brought national attention to the program last year as the team saw more opponents lost, while her and Fleming were set as opposite characters in a major American cultural war Flashpoint.

The situation even got a response from President Donald Trump when he was on the campaign track last October, and called a moment when one of Fleming’s spikes hit an opposite San Diego State player during a game, under a Pakinomist Channel City Hall with Harris Faulkner. Regular police protection was awarded to the team in September and passed through the season.

In addition to slushes and Batie-Smoose’s trial, SJSU is also currently under a federal investigation by the US Ministry of Education for his handling of the situation last year. The study was launched in early February after Trump signed “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports” executive order.

The team saw a mass immigration of its players after the controversial season ended last December. At least seven of the team’s players with residual eligibility went into the transfer portal.

This season, SJSU is in the process of a 6-7 start without Fleming, Slusser and the other transferred players.

Fleming’s College career ended on the last day of November last season when SJSU lost to Colorado State in the Mountain West Tournament final in Las Vegas. SJSU played in the final because the opponent they were intended to meet in the semi -finals, Boise State, lost. Boise State had lost two regular seasonal matches for SJSU that season in the middle of the controversy.

Both players came to SJSU as transfers years earlier. Slusses transferred from the University of Alabama in 2023, while Fleming transferred from Coastal Carolina a year earlier.

Fleming was formerly the center of the best volleyball team in John Champhe High School (in Virginia) history with a historic 19-win season in the 2019-Fleming senior year. That year, Fleming was named First-Team All-District and set the school’s record for a single season for Kills in a season of 266. Slusses claimed in his litigation that SJSU officials hid knowledge of Fleming’s birth sex from her, while allegedly often pairing the two in the same bedroom at night. Slusses also claimed Fleming admitted to being a biological man in a conversation with slushes over ice in April 2024.

“Slusser asked why Fleming hadn’t shared this information with her before, especially when they had lived together. Fleming replied that there never seemed to be a good time to bring them up and that he would have been afraid that slushes might not be his friend whose slusses knew the truth.
