Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres wrote the latest chapter of their rivalry when Dugouts cleared after Fernando Tatis Jr. was hit by a pitch last week.

Padre’s manager Mike Shildt stormed out of Dugout and began shouting at Dodgers Dugout, causing Dodgers -Manager Dave Roberts to confront Shild. The two leaders were a moment nose to the nose before they were separated.

Baseball Hall of Famer Trevor Hoffman participated in the rivalry as a member of Padres for almost 16 seasons. Hoffman works as a senior adviser for baseball operations with Padres.

Hoffman, 57, talked to Pakinomist Digital about how the rivalry between Dodgers and Padres has an “old-school feeling.”

“(Benches -Clearing is) an extension to how heated this rivalry has become. It’s really a measuring stick where your team is on. It’s passionate, guys are interested in winning games on both sides, and sometimes these things happen,” Hoffman told Pakinomist Digital.

“It’s a bit of an old-school feeling, and I know there are rules in place to try to limit some things like this going. But when you play high-level baseball and you try to win ball games, these things will happen, and honestly, I think it’s good for the game.”

Dodgers and Padres are matched in the playoffs in three of the last five postal seasons. Dodgers swept Padres 3-0 in 2020 NLDS on the way to a World Series title.

In 2022 NLDS, Padre’s Dodgers took down in four games to move on to NLCS. In 2024 NLDS, Padres held a 2-1 series lead and pushed dodgers to the brim, but Dodgers gathered to move on and win another world series.

The two teams have played seven games in regular season this season and Dodgers have won five. In these seven matches, Tatis had been hit by a pitch three times.

Twice after Tatis was drilled, Padres -Pitchers hit the Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani with a pitch of presumed retaliation.

“It’s been a few too many times (Tatis had been hit) and when it’s your star player, you protect at some point,” said Hoffman.

“And there are other aspects of the game when you feel like someone steals signs in a place, or someone is going hard into a base that you need to police for the game. But there are rules that try to prevent that kind of thing from happening.”

Hoffman said the bench clip event between the two clubs can galvanize a team.

“You don’t want a guy in your own uniform to feel like you’re getting benefit from and you definitely feel like you’re being attacked and I’m sure both sides did,” Hoffman said.

“You use it as fuel to galvanize your side. Hopefully that energy will remain with both ball clubs and they continue to play good baseball.”

Hoffman said to be successful, a jug must hit, but you need to know how to do it.

“You have to hit to succeed in this game. It’s just you have to learn to turn in. You can’t let some things get away from you, especially up your shoulders,” Hoffman said.

Dodgers are 48-31 and leads NL West with 3½ games over second place San Francisco Giants. Padres are 42-26 and are 5½ games behind Dodgers.

The next time the two NL West rivals are facing is August 15-17 in Los Angeles and 22-24. August in San Diego.
