The US Ministry of Education on Monday informed Harvard University that it was freezing billions of dollars in future research fellow and other help, until the country’s oldest and richest college makes several demands of the Trump administration, a senior official said.

The move represents the latest Salvo from a Trump administration that is willing to use the power of the federal purse to force institutions, from law firms to universities, to make sweeping political changes or lose billions of dollars in federal grants and contracts.

In a letter to Harvard, the US Education Department Secretary Linda McMahon said the university should tackle the concerns of anti -Semitism on campus, school policies that consider a student’s race and administrative complaint that it has left its persecution of “academic expertise” while using relatively few conservative faculties.

“This letter is to inform you that Harvard no longer has to apply for grants from the federal government as no one will be delivered,” McMahon wrote.

Harvard said the McMahon letter is doubled according to requirements that would impose “unprecedented and wrong control” over the university and make new threats to “illegal” detention of financing for life -saving research.

“Harvard will also continue to defend himself against illegal government surplus, aiming to stifle research and innovation that make Americans safer and safer,” a university spokesman said.

The freezing of future funding represents an easily altered tactic of Trump administration if attempts to freeze top schools with existing funds raised legal eyebrows.

Trump has targeted Harvard over accusations of anti-Semitism on campus during pro-Palestinian protests, which the US president has called “anti-Semitic”, in the midst of the ongoing war in the Middle East.

Protesters, including some Jewish groups, say the government is incorrectly concluding their criticism of regional conflict with anti -Semitism and their advocate of Palestinian rights with support for extremism.

Harvard rejected several Trump requirements last month and called them an attack on freedom of expression and academic freedom.
